Gladiator Jet admits injuries are ‘inevitable’ as she addresses exit

Gladiators: Hunter and Jet reunite after 25 years

One of the original Gladiators stars, Jet, also known as Diane Youdale, has reflected on the serious injury she suffered which almost cost her her life.

She explained some bumps and bruises will be “inevitable” but hopes the new gladiators are able to do their stunts safely.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, she said: “I’ve heard that they’re bringing back five of the really popular original events.

“And I don’t think, apart from putting it over a swimming pool, which is what they did for the Sky Gladiators, that they can move away from that.

“Because everyone’s going to be really fighting for their success.

The 53-year-old added: “So injuries are going to be inevitable. It comes as part of the territory.”

“My only hope for the health and safety team behind the new production is that there have been any spinal injuries because they can be fairly permanent and they can be life-changing.

“So I don’t know – I mean, I would love to have done some consultancy work to actually help train the glass with what techniques are better in terms of rugby tackling and things like that because Powerball and the Pyramid, which is when I had my accident, are rugby tackle based and there are safer ways to actually approach tackling in sport.

“But it is an entertainment show, it is going to be a game show, I’ve heard there’s apparently been two injuries already so it”s part of the process.

“I kind of got really passionate about it, but now I kind of go, ‘Do you know what? It kind of made it what it was and what it will be.’

“It just depends if they film the accident and make something of it or if they put it under the carpet and say ‘Everything’s fine.’

“I don’t think they will, I think the integrity of the BBC is better than that.”

Back in 1996, Diane suffered a near-fatal fall from the giant pyramid during filming.

She had leaned awkwardly following a tackle and felt her neck crack.

She was rushed to hospital and was relieved to find she could soon move her fingers and toes again, but she had compressed her spinal cord and was lucky to be alive.
