Gladiators to get big shake-up ahead of reboot as BBC vows to improve old format

Gladiators is to be given a major revamp when it launches on the BBC next year.

In an attempt to find contestants with exciting personalities to match their physique, new applicants are being asked to declare their 'super power' and who would play them in a Hollywood movie.

The Beeb hopes to find a series of characters who will be a big hit with viewers – after the show's previous attempt at a reboot on Sky in 2008 was deemed too bland by fans.

Hopefuls have also been asked to state any athletic events at a professional level they have featured in, as well as details of any 'notable sporting awards or accolades' received.

A show insider told The Sun: "Bosses want the new Gladiators to have bundles of personality, just like the original.

"It’s tough to remember any of the Gladiators from the Sky version as they were deemed too robotic. The reboot will have more of a nod to the original, where the cast became huge stars."

Hosted by John Fashanu and Ulrika Jonsson in its 90s heyday, the show provided a platform for the likes of Jet, Panther, Hunter, Saracen and Wolf who went on to become household names in their own right.

One of those legends, meanwhile – Wolf, now aged 70 – has revealed his son wants to follow in his footsteps and become a Gladiator in the revival series.

Michael Van Wijk made a name for himself after starring as Wolf throughout the show's eight seasons and became the only Gladiator not to miss an episode.

Now, the star has explained that he is ready to pass the torch on to his son.

The bodybuilder told Daily Star: "I can't imagine anyone being the new Wolf expect my son Dean. He has the same sense of humour and sharp wit that will tear the contenders to pieces."

The gym owner added: "He not only looks like me but is a super athletic as well."

Gladiators will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2023.
