Fans of ITV drama series Grace could finally be getting some answers about the detective’s missing wife Sandy. Since the show started, viewers have known Roy Grace’s (played by John Simm) other half mysteriously vanished with very little known about what happened to her. But all of this could be about to change in the forthcoming outing of the hit crime series, which is based on author Peter James’ best-selling Grace novels.

Moreover, James has confirmed he’s writing a novel, which finally addresses Sandy’s fate, starting with the day she left Grace and why she walked away from her marriage to the detective.

Addressing how Sandy’s absence would feature in the new series, Simm, 52, said: “I don’t know about the book, the backstory of what happens to her while offscreen, so I don’t know about that.

“But it’s an ongoing thing. It isn’t solved in the series, she’s still missing but we do see her and we are drip-fed information, cliffhangers and she appears and she comes back and there’s flashbacks.

“You get to see what their relationship was like and you see maybe it wasn’t as perfect as you thought it was and why she left and all that.”

The Life of Mars and Doctor Who star went on to say: “It’s a great little mystery, I think, of the whole thing.

Adding: “The one mystery he can’t solve. This is the closest thing to home.”

Although fans might not be getting a complete resolution to Sandy’s disappearance, the show will finally be inching closer to revealing her fate in season three.

Depending on when James publishes his forthcoming standalone Sandy novel, some of the material could make it into ITV’s Grace in the future.

Season three will certainly be a tough one for the detective as he struggles to move on from his wife.

Grace will be embarking on a romance with pathologist and colleague Cleo Morey (Zoë Tapper).

Simm said: “And it’s complicated because he meets Cleo and the whole thing is a difficult thing to deal with.

“But that’s all great to play and great to have the spectre of Sandy appearing and causing havoc.”

Co-star Richie Campbell, who plays Glenn Branson, teased the new series stepped things up a gear with the subject matter becoming even darker.

The pair, along with the rest of the team, would be taking on some troubling cases starting off with a horrific event at the leaving do of one police officer with Grace and Branson having to awkwardly question high-ranking seniors at the event.

Grace will notice worryingly similarities between the case and question whether a sinister figure from his past known as the ‘Brighton Prowler’ has resurfaced.

Branson and Grace will be trying to work out if it is same man and trying to stop him before his strikes again.

The new series saw writer Russell Lewis stepping down with Ben Court, Caroline Ip and Ed Whitmore picking up the baton this time around.

Grace has proved to be so popular, the show has already got another season with the cast and crew already working on the fourth outing in Brighton.

There is a total of 19 Grace novels to date with James likely to be penning more, which means the show could continue for some time to come.

ITV has only adapted eight novels with another 11 to go and even going beyond the source material.

Grace season 3 airs on ITV1 tonight at 8pm and is streaming on ITVX
