Great Expectations viewers ‘switch off’ as fans slam raunchy scene

Sara whips a man on BBC Great Expectations

The latest BBC episode of Great Expectations saw Young Pip (played by Tom Sweet) continuing with his education with Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman). He also became attached to Estella (Chloe Lea), who introduced him to a boy destined to be a gentleman. Riled into a fight by Estella, the two boys exchanged blows.

However, while Miss Havisham was teaching Pip about love, his sister Sara Gargery (Hayley Squires) got caught in a moment with Mr Pumblechook (Matt Berry).

As Pip wandered around wearing a blindfold while trying to find Estella, the scene cut to Sara whipping Mr Pumblechook.

She had a smile on her face as the blacksmith’s wife caned the businessman.

Afterwards, Sara spoke with her husband Joe Gargery (Owen McDonnell), who was working, as if nothing had happened.

However, following the second instalment, some fans were left less than impressed and many took to social media to share their thoughts.

Some fans claimed to “switch off” the programme, while others were baffled by the S&M (Sadomasochism) scene.

@Chr1stop4 Are said: “We getting a bit of S&M in #GreatExpectations? Yep we are. Didn’t expect that.” (sic)

@Racch_J complained: “#GreatExpectations really is more like a great letdown so far from the book with added S & M…” (sic)

“S&M? Really? #GreatExpectations,” @MichaelHWood asked as @rachelbbridge -added: “Not exactly close to the original material… the whipping scene in particular, but an interesting and watchable take #GreatExpectations.”

@Lahousego fumed: “#GreatExpectations Mr Dickens would turn in his grave…what a complete load of rubbish…you should not b*****ise the classics. .well not that badly! Turned off.” (sic)

@linda_towey tweeted: ” Awful, slow, boring, don’t like many of the cast … I’m out #GreatExpectations.”

While @morpethm_245 shared: “Watched two parts now. Slow, boring and dire. Won’t be watching episode three. #GreatExpectations.”

Although, not all viewers felt let down by the adaptation, with @sajrescuedadog tweeting: “Love #GreatExpectations Don’t usually watch period dramas but this is brilliantly different.”

Great Expectations returns on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
