Hairy Bikers’ star gives update on Dave Myers amid ongoing cancer battle
The Hairy Bikers' Si King appeared on The One Show last night and reported that his pal, Dave Myers, is currently "in the trenches" of cancer treatment.
Dave, 65, who revealed in May this year he had been diagnosed with cancer, recently shared he was undergoing chemotherapy and speaking to The One Show Host, Ronan Keating, Si revealed his co-star is a "tough old boot" who is feeling "stronger every day."
At the start of the interview, Ronan, 45, said: "You're flying solo today. Dave is continuing his cancer treatment."
And Si replied: "It's going really well. He's still in the trenches of his chemo and treatment but all the numbers are going well and he's getting stronger by the day and more positive by the day.
"He's a tough old boot, you know, he's from Barrow in Furness. He's not going to give up easily. He certainly isn't. He's doing great, man. Thank you.
"And all of us, everyone involved with the Bikers, Dave, his wife Lil and the kids, the amount of love that comes over social media is remarkable. It's so appreciated and we loved it; thank you."
Hairy Bikers star Dave has said although his cancer treatment is working, he has noticed several side effects – both painful and unusual.
The Geordie chef, who says he's now embraced baldness, revealed he would be starting chemotherapy in May during a segment on his Agony Uncles podcast, which he does with Si.
He told listeners: "I've got to come clean now. I haven’t been too well recently and, basically, I’ve got to have some chemo.
"I may be a baldy biker for a while it’s simply something I have to live with. I don’t want to make a fuss about it, I look alright bald actually."
Two months on from his decision to go public with his illness, Dave spoke to Kate Thornton on her White Wine and Question Time podcast.
In the rare interview, Dave explained doctors only picked up on his cancer after he had complained about "certain bits and bobs".
He said: "At the minute I'm going through treatment for cancer and it's like another chapter.
"I went to the doctors complaining of certain bits and bobs and the next thing I know I got a phone and told it's a tumour and I'm going to have chemotherapy."
Dave added that although his treatment is doing the trick, he does suffer from a few side effects.
He said: "Fortunately, the chemo is working but it's the effect chemotherapy has on you. Everyday is a school day.
"My eyes are sore because my eyelashes have fallen out – it's c**p like that that's really irritating. But I'm getting there. I've got to go in tomorrow for another lot. I'm just getting through it."
Discussing the last few months since his diagnosis he added: "I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But when I get through this, I'll never whinge again about anything. I'm going to embrace life and everything it's got to offer.
"I can't eat garlic at the minute, smells are really acute, it's all gone belly up. I'm told it will come back."
Another unusual side effect is Dave's apparent craving for Vimto and cottage pie. Now, rather than sitting down with his wife on an evening and opening a bottle of wine, he now opts for his new favourite soft drink.
He said: "I've got a craving for cottage pie and Vimto. Lil's sitting down with a nice glass of Burgundy, and I've got a pint of Vimto. Last time I had Vimto was when I was eight."
Dave's fellow Hairy Biker, also appeared on the podcast and admitted he has found the last two months "tough" as his friend fights his cancer battle.
Si said: "It's hard seeing someone you love in those trenches. It really is tough. He's as tough as an old boot, which is what we're all relying on. He's as hard as nails."
