‘Heartbroken’ Susanna Reid shares emotional tribute to BBC co-star Bill Turnbull

Susanna Reid has led the tributes for journalist and broadcaster Bill Turnbull who has sadly died, with the Good Morning Britain anchor "heartbroken" over the sad news.

Bill, who used to present BBC Breakfast, died on August 31, but the news only broke today (September 1) that he had passed away aged 66 following a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

His colleagues and friends have paid tribute to the beloved broadcaster, with Susanna Reid leading sweet messages of condolence.

Close pal and former colleague Susanna took to Twitter write a tribute which read: "Bill was the kindest, funniest, most generous man in the business.

"I feel lucky to have worked with him and he taught me everything. But above all, he was devoted to his family and I am heartbroken for them. RIP Bill. We will miss you so much."

While fellow former BBC star Dan Walker penned a sweet message on social media where he said: "Bill Turnbull was so kind and generous when I took over from him on BBC Breakfast.

"He was full of brilliant advice and it was clear just how loved he was by his colleagues and the audience."

He added: "It was an honour to sit on his sofa. My thoughts are with his family and friends."

Jon Kay, who took over from Dan Walker on BBC Breakfast has also paid tribute. He wrote on social media: "So very sad to hear this news. Bill was an absolute gent – respected and loved by everyone at #BBCBreakfast over many many years. Thinking of his lovely family."

Steph McGovern who presents Steph's Packed Lunch on Channel 4 was also among the celebrities and journalists to pay their respects: "Absolutely gutted that our Bill Turnbull has passed away. A fantastic broadcaster and a brilliant friend….

"I learnt so much from him. And we had some cracking arguments about how you should pronounce words like ‘poor'. We all loved him."

As well as tributes posted online, Naga Munchetty paid tribute to Bill while on air as she hosted BBC Breakfast today.

Getting emotional alongside Charlie Stayt, Naga broke the news and then went on to reminisce about the "really funny things" Bill did.

She added: "His energy was amazing, he came into this programme and threw everything at it, every single day.

"He was funny when we sat here on the sofa, he was a brilliant journalist and he loved this programme, and he loved serving you – the audience."
