BBC presenter Helen Skelton and her partner Gorka Marquez have rocketed to the top of the leaderboard after wowing the judges with their Blue Peter Charleston last weekend. Now Helen is neck-and-neck with Hamza Yassin and ahead of singer Fleur East, could this year’s Strictly Come Dancing final be hers to lose?

Helen was forced to shut down a probe from Rylan Clark on It Takes Two after the presenter claimed she’s Strictly fans’ current favourite.

Last Saturday, the remaining couples celebrated the BBC’s Centenary with a night of TV-themed routines.

The former Blue Peter presenter and her pro partner Gorka danced a cheerful Charleston which won them an impressive total score of 35.

However, the Strictly star didn’t want to make any assumptions about the rest of the competition when she chatted with Rylan on Friday.

During his interview with the pair, Rylan threw up a tweet from a Strictly fan which claimed Helen was a shoo-in for this year’s final.

He read: “Alex tweeted, ‘This could be the turning point for Helen’s ascent to the trophy…’

“It’s a bold statement!” Rylan exclaimed as Helen tried to shut down the premature celebrations.

“I’m superstitious,” Helen admitted. “I don’t like to talk about anything past the next week.”

Despite her reservations, Helen and Gorka were still excited to talk about their plans for the following Saturday night.

She recalled: “Last week I was like, ‘What shall we do next week?’ And [Gorka] was like, ‘Oh, hello!’”

Although Helen was quick to put the speculation to rest, many Strictly fans will still have their money on the presenter landing a place in the top three.

Helen and Gorka’s scores have been steadily improving over the past five weeks.

Before their stunning 35 last Saturday, their Paso Doble scored a respectable 29, while their Movie Week Viennese Waltz scored 31.

If the upwards trend continues, they could be walking away with some of this series’ highest scores as the competition heats up.

Teasing what’s to come this weekend, Helen and Gorka confirmed they’ll be dancing a Red Riding Hood-themed Foxtrot for Halloween Week.

“She’s Red Riding Hood and I’m the wolf,” Gorka confirmed after joking it would be the other way around.

“[It’s going] good!” Helen confirmed. “Touch wood. It’s a different one from last week.

“It’s like a total gear change, but I think that’s good for us.

“It’s back to a ballroom so in-hold, but I’m not allowed to look at you, I’ve got to look over there.”

Helen has clearly already learned a lot from Gorka over the past few weeks, so hopefully, the Foxtrot shouldn’t be too much for the fan-favourite pair to handle this weekend.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6:40pm on BBC. Strictly: It Takes Two airs weekdays at 6:30pm on BBC Two.
