The Crown season five arrives on Netflix on November 9 and it has been shrouded in controversy ahead of its release. The season features the downfall of the marriage between Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) and Diana, Princess of Wales (Elizabeth Debicki). Express.co.uk has all you need to know about who plays Mohamed Al-Fayed.

Who plays Mohamed Al-Fayed in The Crown season 5?

Mohamed Al-Fayed may be recognised for being the owner of Hôtel Ritz Paris and formerly Harrods department store and Fulham F.C.

His son from his first marriage to Samira Khashoggi, Dodi, was in a romantic relationship with Diana when they both tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

The year after her death, he bought Princess Diana’s old boarding school in Kent and helped found the New School at West Heath.

The school was for children with additional needs and mental health problems.

He first met Diana and Charles when they were introduced at a polo tournament in July 1986, that had been sponsored by Harrods.

In the series, he is played by Israeli actor Salim Dau in the scenes from the 1990s.

The 72-year-old actor is known for his roles in Gaza mon amour, Fauda, and Tyrant.

“It’s huge, it’s the most wonderful gift an actor can dream of — it’s the biggest role of my career,” he told a Ynet news site.

Meanwhile, Amir El-Masry plays the character in flashback scenes and he is a British-Egyptian actor.

He is best known for his Scottish BAFTA win having starred in the film Limbo.

He has also starred in the BBC drama Industry, Amazon’s Jack Ryan and SAS: Rogue Heroes.

Salim was born in Israel but defines himself as Palestinian. Viewers may also recognise him from HBO’s Oslo and Netflix’s Fauda.

As for Amir, the 32-year-old actor from Cairo has starred in The One, El-Brinseesa Beesa and Jack Ryan.

Princess Diana visited Harrods regularly in the 1980s and she became close to the Al-Fayeds over the years.

After Diana and Charles divorced in 1996, Diana was hosted by Mohamed in the south of France with Princes William and Harry.

For the holiday, Mohamed bought a yacht, originally called the Jonikal, and his son Dodi and Diana later began a private cruise on the yacht.

Paparazzi photographs of the couple embracing each other were published and it was confirmed the pair were in a romance.

Dodi and Diana later went on a second private cruise on the Jonikal, before privately dining at the Ritz.

They had planned to spend the night at Dodi’s apartment near the Arc de Triomphe and left the restaurant in a Mercedes-Benz S280 driven by chauffeur Henri Paul.

Five minutes after they left, the car crashed in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel and Dodi and the chauffeur were found dead at the scene.

Diana died afterwards in hospital, meanwhile British bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones sustained a serious head injury.

Mohamed arrived in Paris a day later and viewed his son’s body, which was returned to the UK for an Islamic funeral.

The Crown season 5 airs on Netflix on November 9.
