Holby City star Rosie Marcel has had a pop at the BBC for axing the show six months after the hit show's final episode.

The actress, who played Jac Naylor, is frustrated by the decision.

She said: “Holby was never this big, publicised show. Should it have had more publicity? F*** yes, absolutely. Excuse my language.

“And could the BBC have done more? Oh God absolutely. Absolutely. It’s bulls**t.

“If we are going to call a spade a spade, let’s absolutely do it. I have no need to be loyal at the moment. They killed a show they shouldn’t have killed.

“They just didn’t want to spend any money on it any more. I think it is down to money.

“There’s not one person to blame, but I wish they had seen it more for what
    it was.”

Rosie was surgeon Jac for 17 years before the character was killed off in the final episode in March. She said: “It was like a
bereavement. Jac was my friend – I lost my friend. I didn’t want her to die. I fought and fought and fought and I lost.

“It’s horrible. The show ending like that was so unexpected for everybody.”

Rosie won Best Drama Star at last week’s Inside Soap Awards.

She said: “I feel very lucky. I do feel recognised. It doesn’t help me get any work, but it is very nice.”

BBC bosses announced the shock decision last year, writing: :"We are incredibly proud of Holby City but it’s with great sadness that we are announcing that after 23 years, the show will end on screen in March of next year.

"We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC's commitment to make more programmes across the UK, we have taken the difficult decision to bring the show to a close in order to reshape the BBC's drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing team at BBC Studios and all the cast and crew who have been involved in the show since 1999.

"Holby has been a stalwart with audiences, delighting millions of viewers each week and winning hundreds of awards with a compelling mix of cutting edge medical stories and explosive personal stories.

"We look forward to working with the team over the coming months to ensure that when it ends, Holby goes out on a high."
