Holly Willoughby’s position ‘vulnerable’ as ‘nasty storm’ brewing for ITV show

Dermot acknowledges This Morning is 'in the news'

After leaving This Morning following speculation of a fall out behind-the-scenes, Phillip Schofield recently confessed to having an affair with a younger male colleague.

Admitting that he had lied to those at ITV, who launched an investigation into the relationship three years ago, Phillip detailed also misleading other people about the affair including Holly.

Following his admission, his former co-host released a statement expressing she had asked Phillip about the rumours at the time which he denied.

Holly confessed to being hurt to learn that he had lied to her, while she continues to take time away from the show.

Despite her expected return to This Morning at the beginning of June, some believe her position on the programme is now “vulnerable” due to her former friendship with Phillip.

Speaking about whether or not Holly will come back despite the backlash, showbiz reporter Hannah Hope questioned the security of her job at the broadcaster.

Appearing on Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine, she said: “I think she is vulnerable. Let’s be clear, she said she was lied to by Phillip from the horse’s mouth.

“The problem is her association with Phillip. If she’s back on that sofa, viewers are just going to remember her long-term 14-year partnership with this man who lied to them.

“I think that her future really is also in doubt and looking a bit shaky.”

Hannah explained to the Channel 5 host that she’s been informed by people close to Holly that she has no plans to step away from her role.

Touching on her expected return at the start of June, Hannah added: “Her sitting on the sofa, is that not going to remind everyone who is tuned into This Morning of the toxicity that has been talked about?

“It’s not just his affair with the runner now, we’re talking about his whole brand and how he treated staff and fellow talent including Dr Ranj and Eamonn.

“So there really is a nasty storm brewing for This Morning and the future of the show.”

Since Phillip’s exit and Holly’s time away, fans have seen Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary hold down the fort.

After his statement on Friday admitting to the affair, the show has been heavily scrutinised with many calling for it to be axed altogether or to put it on hold until an independent investigation into the relationship happens.

However, a spokesperson for ITV shut down speculation the programme is in danger as they said: “This Morning is not under review. The show will return on Monday.”

This Morning continues weekdays on ITV from 10am.
