How Coronation Street’s Daisy’s wedding dress was altered for acid attack storyline
Coronation Street actress Charlotte Jordan, who plays Daisy Midgeley, has opened up on her recent harrowing acid attack storyline, and how her wedding dress needed to be altered for the harrowing scenes.
Her character has been seen suffering at the hands of a stalker, Justin Rutherfield (Andrew Still), whilst trying to plan her wedding to fiance Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).
Amid Justin's stalking campaign, Daisy got him arrested after authorities didn't take her seriously, but Justin is then released and decides to take drastic revenge on Daisy on her wedding day, in scenes to be aired next week.
Her big day gets off to a rocky start, after she wakes up with a red eye, has the wrong name on the cake and her wedding car is stolen, before Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) steps in as her chauffeur.
But as the pair stand in the pub before leaving, they are confronted by Justin who is holding a glass full of clear liquid, which turns out to be acid, that he hurls at the bride.
Speaking to Express.co.uk about Daisy's dress, Charlotte said: “The wedding dress had to be “Daisyfied” but it also had to be practical for what the purpose was for it.
“There was going to be a lot of physicality down the line. So, it couldn’t have been this massive heavy ball gown.
“Initially, it was strapless and I felt we had to add some security to the top of it so that when she’s running around later I’m protected.
“It had to be a very Daisy dress but it also had to be practical for what came later.”
Coronation Street has worked alongside The Katie Piper Foundation and Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI) for the harrowing story.
Loose Women star Katie Piper was the victim of a horrific acid attack in March 2008, which was arranged by her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Lynch, and carried out by Stefan Syvestre.
He threw sulphuric acid in her face, which severely burned her face and blinded her in her left eye.
Speaking about the upcoming scenes in Coronation Street, soap boss Iain MacLeod said: “We were keen to show the long-term reality for people who are subjected to this kind of attack.
“It is something we might often read about in the papers but perhaps don’t fully understand, in terms of the depth and variety of effects it can have.
“As well as the medical impacts, we explore the social fallout of having your appearance profoundly changed, both in terms of your own ability to process that and how the wider world reacts to you.
“The story will at times be heartbreaking but we felt it was an important one to tell.”
