I bought a storage unit full of old newspapers – they were worth a life-changing sum for a very lucky reason | The Sun

AN AVID treasure hunter has stumbled upon a huge stack of old newspapers in an abandoned unit with a value that had increased almost 100 times.

Dave Hester, an auction hunter who hosted US reality TV show Storage Wars, was shocked when he picked a newspaper up from the stack.

He said: "Oh wow, this is from Memphis Press. This is big, this is gonna add up to hundreds of dollars, or even tens of thousands of dollars. I couldn't imagine how many papers are here."

The front page story showed "A lonely life ends on Elvis Presley Boulevard."

Dave suggested it was either published on the day or the day after Elvis's death.

Dave met Joseph Carretta, an Elvis Presley press collector based in Temecula California, to find out the value of the papers.

The expert confirmed: "This is a re-print of a five-day event after Elvis passed away but still it is an original."

He added that it is a "piece of historical significance" and "I believe the value is, at least, $5 (£4) – so you are looking at $15,000 (£12,280) on a low end and possibly, as a high end, $30,000 (£24,560)."

Dave also had an "original release" from another newspaper, The Comercial Appeal, that reported Elvis Presley's death.

"This is of some significant value, this paper was released on Wednesday the 17th, the day after Elvis passed away," he told Dave.

He then gave a shocking evaluation on the memorabilia, as he continued: "I think you are looking at $10 (£8) per newspaper and you have 6,000 newspapers, now you are looking at $60,000 (£49,130) on a low end, high $90,000 (£73,700)."

Dave was ecstatic by the news and said: "I've just hit the jackpot! Joseph just doubled my profit by telling me I need to separate these newspapers."
