Fan-favourite Nadia became a hit with audiences across the world after first appearing in the Netflix series Indian Matchmaking in 2019 as one of professional matrimonial specialist Sima Taparia’s clients.

Nadia was unlucky in love after it seemed neither of her matches worked out on the show, however, in season two she faced a viewer backlash after she appeared to let down fellow romantic hopeful Shekar Jayaraman in favour of Vishal Kalyanasundaram.

At the close of season one, Nadia and Shekhar went on a date with the second series showing the pair hadn’t gotten much further in their courtship.

In the show, it appeared Nadia was still seeing prospective match Shekhar, while also starting to date Vishal who was introduced to the series.

Later in season two, events planner Nadia was also told by Sima to make a decision with Shekhar if she wasn’t planning to continue seeing him.

Nadia then told Shekhar over a video call she was seeing Vishal and didn’t want to take things further.

In response, Shekhar told her he’d found it hard watching her kiss another man and was left in tears.

She said: “The timeline is something that was really [the] missing piece of context from the storyline. Originally, Shekhar and I met in 2019 when we were filming for season one.

“We didn’t begin filming for season two until 2021, so there were two years in between season one and season two. During that time, I was dating someone else for about a year.

“During that time, Shekhar and I remained friends. We continued to speak. We would FaceTime each other, my boyfriend would also FaceTime with us and the two of them had a little friendship as well.”

Things didn’t work out with her boyfriend and at the start of season two, Nadia was again single and ready to mingle.

She went on to say: “So, when this season came around and we were at the mixer, Vishal walked in and he was funny and charming and cute, so I thought we really hit it off that night.

“So, for me, there was nothing to question because I was never with Shekhar or exclusive or dating or anything like that. He was a friend of mine.”

Nadia went on to address Shekhar’s response to things not working and the awkward video call between them, which left the Chicago-based attorney hastily walking off-camera.

She admitted it “didn’t make sense” when she was watching it. Nadia said: “I saw that scene and his reaction to our FaceTime call and I was actually very surprised myself. To me, there was no communication of feelings that were further than friendship and I was pretty shocked by that.”

Nadia has faced much online vitriol, which she said had been “stressful” and had received very “hurtful” messages.

Although Netflix has yet to officially commission season three of Indian Matchmaking, Nadia she was not going to be a part of it.

Nonetheless, there were no hard feelings and she would be “cheering from the sidelines” for her fellow singletons in their quest for love.

Nadia also said she had “no regrets” about appearing on Indian Matchmaking, allowing her to connect with people across the globe about their dating stories as well as offering much-needed onscreen representation from the South Asian community.

She said: “All really great things have come from it. I’ve met some amazing people and made some amazing connections, had great conversations with people. I am really grateful for it and it’s just about finding the silver lining and taking it in strides and that’s exactly what I’m trying to do.”

Sadly, as Indian Matchmaking showed, things didn’t work out between Nadia and Vishal and she was left in tears following the onscreen break-up.

She is now single again and focusing on herself including a “potential move” as well as travelling again.

She added: “I am dating but just at my own pace right now because there’s a lot going on. I am dating and so I haven’t written all men off just yet. I have always made time for it. It’s something I’ve always made time for.”

Nadia also admitted she was “pivoting” her business and was “super excited” about the possibilities and further opportunities they could bring.
