Is Cocaine Bear based on a true story? | The Sun

CAN you imagine a huge American Black Bear on the loose and high on 75lbs worth of cocaine?

Well, this is exactly what happens in the new movie Cocaine Bear – with some people wondering if this could possibly be a true story.

What is Cocaine Bear?

Cocaine Bear is a new American comedy horror survival film directed and co-produced by Elizabeth Banks from a screenplay by Jimmy Warden.

The premise of the film sounds like something out of a Pablo Escobar movie.

After ingesting a duffel bag full of cocaine, an American black bear goes on a murderous rampage in a small Kentucky town.

A group of locals and tourists must then join forces in order to survive the attack.

Is Cocaine Bear based on a true story?

Announced in April 2022, Cocaine Bear raised eyebrows due to its incredible premise that is, in fact, inspired by real-life events.

The film is loosely based on the true story of a 175-pound American black bear that died after ingesting a duffel bag full of cocaine in December 1985.

The cocaine had been dropped out of an airplane piloted by Andrew C. Thornton II, a former narcotics officer and convicted drug smuggler, because his plane was carrying too heavy a load.

Thornton then jumped off the plane with a faulty parachute and died.

The bear was found three months later in the north of the state of Georgia alongside 40 opened plastic containers of cocaine.

The bear is currently on display at the Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington, Kentucky.

When is the Cocaine Bear release date?
