Last year saw the death of Queen Elizabeth II, just months after the longest-reigning monarch celebrated her Platinum Jubilee. In an ITV results document for 2022, it is revealed that the satirical comedy Spitting Image was pulled from the channel and that it is “unlikely” the episodes “will ever be screened”.

The sketch show sees puppet versions of celebrities, politicians and other well-known faces.

Royals are also often the brunt of the jokes within the show, and the Queen was no exception.

On her majesty’s death, ITV concluded: “Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, the M&E business incurred significant additional costs related to news coverage over and above normal day‑to‑day costs.

“The business has also written off the remaining Spitting Image episodes featuring the Queen, as they could not be effectively edited and so it is highly unlikely they will ever be screened.

“In total, the business has incurred £16 million of costs in relation to this which is considered exceptional.”

Based on the 1984 original series, Spitting Image returned in 2020 with a new host of famous faces to poke fun at.

Politicians such as Priti Patel, Michael Gove and Matt Hancock have featured heavily in the comedy series, but it seems “the Queen” was due to make a few more appearances before her death.

According to ITV, it seems very unlikely the episodes will ever be viewed by fans.

The incident was listed as one of the channel’s “exceptional items” in a breakdown of financial costs in the last year.

The world was shaken in September when it was announced Queen Elizabeth II, 96, had died.

A period of national mourning followed as tributes from around the world honoured the life of her majesty, who took the throne in 1952.

She died at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire and has been succeeded by her eldest son, Charles III.

King Charles III has yet to partake in his official Coronation, which is scheduled for May.

Plans are in the works though and it seems the royals are gearing up for a spectacular event.

It’s been reported that the Coronation will be smaller than Queen Elizabeth II’s, but Brits will receive an extra Bank Holiday in celebration.
