Jedward launch bid to become Big Brother 2023 hosts as Rylan Clark not asked
ITV has confirmed that Big Brother will be returning to our screens.
The show's return was revealed in epic fashion during the ad break of the dramatic Love Island final last night.
Big Brother was originally screened on Channel 4 and later moved to Channel 5, who axed the show in 2018 after 18 years of the legendary reality series.
But now ITV bosses have officially confirmed they've secured a deal to bring the show back.
The new series has been dubbed the "Big Brother for the Love Island generation" as producers hope to draw in a younger audience.
Paul Mortimer, director of reality commissioning & acquisitions and controller for ITV2, ITVBe and CITV, said: “This refreshed, contemporary new series of Big Brother will contain all the familiar format points that kept viewers engaged and entertained the first time round, but with a brand new look and some additional twists that speak to today’s audience.
"We’re beyond excited to bring this iconic series to ITV2 and ITVX where it should especially engage with our younger viewers.”
Here's everything we know so far about Big Brother's return.
When is Big Brother returning?
Big Brother will be making its return in 2023, although no official start date has been confirmed by ITV yet.
The new series will be airing on ITV and ITVX and will follow a similar format to previous series, but will also include a "contemporary new look".
ITV said: "The action will all play out under the roof of the iconic Big Brother house, which will be given its own contemporary new look ready for this reimagining of the show.
"Clever tasks, nail-biting nominations and live evictions will be back, with the public once again playing a crucial role, voting throughout the series and ultimately determining the winner, who will walk away with a life changing cash prize."
Who will host Big Brother?
Big Brother has had some iconic hosts, including Emma Willis, Rylan Clark and Davina McCall, and fans have been eager to find out whether they'll return to their hosting duties for the 2023 series.
But it seems that the old hosts might not be set for a comeback as the show looks to go in a "totally new and fresh" direction.
An insider said: “This needs to be totally new and fresh. It’s all about drawing in a young audience. The aim is to get back to basics and interfere less, with fewer challenges.”
Earlier this year, former host Emma Willis told This Morning host Alison Hammond that if the show returned it would be a “new era, new host”.
But one former host has hinted at his return.
Rylan Clark was delighted with the news of Big Brother's comeback and he took to Twitter to share the announcement with fans as he wrote: "He was always watching… It’s coming home."
But eagle-eyed fans were also quick to spot that Rylan's location in his Twitter bio puts him as in The Big Brother House — leading some to believe he could be teasing his return.
Rylan later clarified his remarks, telling followers on August 2: "Should clarify. I’ve not been asked to host the show. As a fan, like always, I’m made up it’s coming back. I know how hard you/we all fought to keep that name alive and I’m so glad it paid off in the end. The OG reality is back. It’s the news we wanted. Welcome back bro x #bbuk."
He added: "Praying for *Normal housemates from all walks *Live evictions *No outside contact *Public vote *Adopt a small part of gameplay from overseas territories *Some form of Live feed *Big Brother to always be in charge.
"So we will see… v early days Re team / host etc. Regardless we wanted it back and it came back."
Other celebs have also been throwing their hat in the ring, including previous Big Brother contestants Jedward.
The identical twin brothers expressed that they're keen to host the new series as they tweeted: "Big Brother UK 2023 we should definitely Host it. Iconic Housemates."
John and Edward appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2011 and 2017.
How to apply for Big Brother 2023
As Big Brother returns, so will a whole new cast of housemates.
But to be selected, they'll need to go through a rigorous process.
ITV said: "A new cast of carefully selected housemates, from all walks of life, will take up residence in the world’s most famous reality TV home for up to six weeks, with cameras capturing their every move, and the nation following every twist and turn."
Applications for the 2023 series aren't currently open, but when they do open up it's likely that you'll need to apply on the ITV website.
If the application process is the same as it used to be, then you'll need to upload a 60 second video clip showcasing your personality.
For previous series, it's been required that you share the video clip on social media.
You'll also need to fill in an application form on the audition page.
The requirements haven't been confirmed yet, but it's likely that you'll need to be over the age of 18 and legally living in the UK.
