Jeremy Clarkson to stay as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host for the moment

Jeremy Clarkson will stay as the host for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? for now coming under fire for his comments about Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex.

In a recent column for The Sun newspaper, Jeremy, 62, said he feels “hate” for Meghan and dreams of seeing her publicly humiliated.

Speaking at a Broadcasting Press Guild event in London on Tuesday 20 December, Kevin Lygo, managing director of ITV Studios, said: “I would say what he writes in a newspaper column… We have no control over what he says.

“We hire him as a consummate broadcaster of the most famous quiz on television, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

“So it’s not quite in our wheelhouse but I don’t know what he was thinking when he wrote that. It was awful.”

Kevin was then asked if they would be keeping Jeremy as host on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, to which he replied: “Yes, at the moment we are.”

Asked if Jeremy represents ITV’s values, the TV boss said: "No, of course he doesn’t in that instance.”

On Monday 19 December, Jeremy responded to the controversy, by writing on Twitter: “Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it.

“In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people.

“I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”

The article was removed from The Sun’s website on Monday 19 December at Jeremy's request.

Jeremy had drawn criticism from multiple public figures – including his own daughter Emily Clarkson, who took to social media to speak out against her father.

She wrote: "My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.

"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred."

On Tuesday 20 December morning, the Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso) said Jeremy's newspaper column has become its most complained about article of all-time.

His column came after the Duchess of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry recently released the first and second part of their Netflix documentary, Harry and Meghan.

In the episodes, the couple spoke about the public scrutiny Meghan has faced, their journeys as senior Royal members, as well as Prince Harry's drama with his brother Prince William.
