You hear her before you see her. I always imagined Bryce as refined, a little ethereal. It turns out that she actually has a huge booming cackle that rattles across the medieval terrace overlooking the main harbour of Marta’s capital Valletta. We’re there for the final day of press to promote the home entertainment release of Dominion and she’s been outside in 35 degrees heat all day. I’m her last interview, and I worry she may be tired and jaded. Instead, she is beaming, bright and irresistibly delightful. And boy, that laugh is a wonder. It hits me as I introduce myself before the interview starts and reveal I split my trousers in the coach on the way over (so no peeking in those dark glasses). Hooting with laughter she trades that for a confession she struggles with sweat so much that before the interview she laid out all her clothes on her hotel bed and sprayed them with water to see which would stain the least! And then, she apologises for those superstar shades, but it’s glaringly bright and her eyes are sore. SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW

Once we stop giggling and try to be professional, we reflect on the end of a film saga that has spanned almost 30 years since the first Jurassic Park movie in 1993, along with billions of dollars and a couple of million years of evolution. The final film even brings back legacy actors Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill from the first trilogy.

Bryce says: “Its been so amazing this whole experience with (directors) Colin (Trevorrow) and JA (Bayona) on Fallen Kingdom, and with the way in which this cast has grown and grown into this ensemble that now includes the entire original cast of Jurassic Park. It’s such an incredible experience on so many levels and now it’s over. This is my last day of press, this is it. It’s sad. I’m gonna cry. It’s definitely sad and I’ll never get used to that it all happened. It was wonderful.”

But is it really all over? There have been rumblings of potential spin-offs with new star DeWanda Wise’s character Kayla…

Bryce thinks it will happen: “And now seeing DeWanda Wise and her character and the possibility of where this story can go. It’s thrilling. There has to be… There has to be another film with dinosaurs!”

Can we quote her on that? She roars with laughter and adds: “This is not confirmed, this is me talking!”

It’s unmistakable just how much fun the actress had on this franchise and taking her character Clare on a journey from buttoned-up executive in those infamous heels to merrily tasering monsters in combat gear by the end. But then, this is a star who blasted back at the internet “outrage” over her running from dinosaurs in her stilettos in the first Jurassic World film with the simple facts: “The takeaway is that she could outrun a T. Rex in high heels, how badass is she?”

So many of her classic roles like The Village have centred on nuanced emotions and those mesmerising eyes, it’s easy to forget that away from the big screen she has always been a total action girl. Raised resolutely away from Hollywood, it wasn’t a childhood filled with Faberge eggs and tea parties.

She guffaws at the thought: “Oh no, no, definitely not. It was all karate and mucking out the goat barns. I love action films, I love being physical. As a kid and teenager, I was teaching karate and I thought I wanted to go to college for basketball and had to decide between that and theatre. It was one of the most difficult decisions of my life.”

The 5’7 star has also been outspoken about the pressures in Hollywood to stay extraordinarily thin, when she is naturally rather more athletically and powerfully built. Luckily, she had strong support from Trevorrow who encouraged her to stay at her natural weight and full strength, especially when she had a gruelling shoot filled with challenging and physically punishing stunts, from jungle chases to death-defying rooftop scrambles across Malta.

When, before the interview, I complimented her on how well she looked and how I admired her determination not to conform to Hollywood stereotypes, she beamed and simply said: “I got to do so much on this film, all the stunts, that frankly I couldn’t have pulled off if I had been dieting all the time.”

Instead, Bryce famously flaunted the resulting bruises in 2020 in a social media posts as she grinned madly and wrote: “Raise your hands if you’re happy to be doing stunts again!!”

It’s not just a celebration of the power of showing strong women on screen, Bryce is also frank about embracing the personal joy it brings her.

She says: “Being in your body, it’s so rewarding. It’s wonderful to express yourself that way. There’s bumps and bruises but you’re safe. I’m not a risk-taker in my life but I love being on movie sets doing crazy stuff. Because it’s fun!”

Jurassic World Dominion: Bryce Dallas Howard on new film

From running in heels to submerging herself in gloopy green swaps and becoming a fully-fledged action hero, the star has embraced the journey she’s been on with Clare, and also pays tribute to her director: “I always felt empowered, every single minute of Jurassic, by Colin Trevorrow.”

Now it’s time for her work to empower million of little girls and boys around the world. The (human) dinosaurs of this world don’t stand a chance.
