The Loose Women presenter and journalist took to the famous Strictly Come Dancing floor for the first time on Saturday night in the first episode of series 20. Partnered with Kai Widdrington, she performed a Tango but confessed she had been hard on herself over a few mistakes she made on the live BBC show. Talking to Janette Manrara on Thursday’s spin-off show Strictly – It Takes Two, Kaye reflected on how her colleagues, who came to watch her at the studio, comforted her following her routine.

Recalling how judge Craig Revel Horwood’s praise had meant a lot to her, the 59-year-old told Janette: “It does mean a lot, you know, because when you start off on this, hopefully, the nerves will subside a little but I mean, I was very, very nervous.

“And you know Craig is legendary, isn’t he? And I was standing there thinking he is going to muller me here.”

“We were prepared for it!” Kai agreed, laughing. However, Kaye had a few positive remarks for the pair.

“The fact he also suggested there may be some point in staying meant a lot…” Kaye commented.

“You’re so hard on yourself!” Janette told her. “You were brilliant!”

She added: “You also had your other gorgeous friends from Losee Women, Jane [Moore] and Nadia [Sawalha].

“They were in the audience. What did they think of the show?”

“Oh, well, they were so supportive,” Kaye replied. “I mean, it was absolutely great to have them there.

“I think they fed the entire row. They brought snacks, they brought drinks. I mean there were Fruit Pastilles going up and down the line.”

“They were campaigning,” Janette quipped before Kaye reflected on how they had made her feel better after her dance.

“And like you said, I’m hard on myself so when I came off I was, ‘On no, girls oh no I messed up.’

“And they’re like, ‘Shut up, shut up!’ So, tough love – very tough love!”

“Well, that’s in the past,” Janette remarked, steering the conversation towards this weekend’s dance.

“We are done with the Tango and we’re moving on to the next dance. It’s the Charleston – one of my favourites!”

The presenter and former Strictly professional probed: “And last week you said that the Tango made your brain ache, this week with the Charleston, it’s making your body ache, isn’t it?”

“I mean it’s physical, isn’t it?” Kaye confirmed. “It’s like the hardest aerobics class you’ve ever been to.

“And when you get to the end of the routine… because it’s quite a tough routine and it’s quite energetic, isn’t it?”

“You know what Kai, you said you were really impressed with Kaye’s training ethic,” Janette pointed out.

“So how is she going into it this week now?” she asked, to which Kai confidently responded the pair had the right attitude for a successful dance.

“Well, you know like you said we’ve put the Tango behind us we’ve come in with a positive attitude this weekend,” he answered.

The dancer teased: “You know yourself, what better dancer to have the chance to come back with a bang? And you know, we’re literally throwing everything at this I said it’s like the cirque du Soleil of Charlestons.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One.
