Keanu Reeves Heads to Small Screen for ‘Devil in the White City’ TV Adaptation
The ‘Matrix’ actor will star on the long-gestating adaptation of Erik Larson’s ‘Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America’ on Hulu.
AceShowbiz –Keanu Reeves has scored his first major TV role. “The Matrix” star is set to head to the small screen as he will star on “Devil in the White City“, the long-gestating adaptation of Erik Larson’s “Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America” on Hulu.
The streaming network officially announced the project on Thursday, August 4 as part of Hulu’s virtual time before press at the Television Critics Association’s summer tour. The 2003 nonfiction book follows Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the Fair’s shadow.
Variety states that the production has officially been ordered to series at Hulu, with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio serving as executive producers alongside the “The Matrix Resurrections” star and Jennifer Davisson. Sam Shaw (Hulu’s “Castle Rock) is on board as writer, showrunner and executive producer.
The project marks Reeve’s first major U.S. TV role. While the 57-year-old actor is known for his roles in “The Matrix” series and “John Wick“, his roles on television have mostly consisted of made-for-TV films in his early career.
News about Reeves being in talks for TV project first broke in January. The adaptation has long been in the works as Hulu announced in 2019 that it was developing the project as a big-budget series with DiCaprio and Scorsese exec producing.
The “Don’t Look Up” actor bought the film rights to the book in 2010 and previously set it up as a feature at Paramount with Scorsese, who became attached to the project in 2015, to direct. Todd Field is on board now to direct the series, which is now a co-production between Paramount Television Studios and Disney’s ABC Signature.
The eight-episode series is targeted for a 2024 launch, while production of the planned series is expected to commence next year.
