Korean Netflix drama Queenmaker stars Kim Hee-ae and Moon So-ri

Political thriller Queenmaker debuts globally on Netflix tomorrow (April 14). The 12-part series will follow a spin doctor seeking to put one person into power as the 39th Seoul Mayoral be-election looms large. The candidates will be emerging with some believing Kyung-sook (played by Jolene Kim) should be the mayor of Seoul, while others seek to put Jae-min (Soo-young Ryu) into office. There will be plenty of twists and turns along the way in the race to power.
Queenmaker is directed by Oh Jin-suk, who has previously worked on My First Love.
He said viewers who weren’t necessarily interested in politics could also enjoy this thriller.
The filmmaker teased to The Korea Times how audience would be captivated by the central leads as they took on fresh characters which were “out of their comfort zone”.
Queenmaker boasts a strong cast of Korean actors, here’s a look at where you may have seen them before.
Who is in the Queenmaker cast?
Hwang Do-hee – Kim Hee-ae
Award-winning actress Kim Hee-ae takes on the role spin doctor Hwang Do-hee, who appears to be the titular queen maker who makes and breaks aspiring politicians.
Kim has previously starred in The Vanished, Herstory, My Husband’s Lover, Secret Love Affair, Midas, The World of the Marries, Secret and A Wife’s Credentials.
Oh Seung-sook – Moon So-ri
Fellow acclaimed star Moon So-ri plays Oh Seung-sook, a human rights lawyer whom the queen maker is determined to put into power.
The actress and director has appeared in Oasis, The Running Actress, The Handmaiden, A Good Lawyer’s Wife, On the Verge of Insanity and will next be appearing in Race and You Have Done Well.
Baek Jae Min – Soo-young Ryu
Soo-young Ryu portrays Baek Jae Min with the star appearing in Endless Love, Summertime, Steel Rain 2, Good Witch, Father Is Strange and Love in Sadness.
He will next be appearing in the short film Wine, which has been completed, according to Netflix.
Son Young Shim – Seo Yi-sook
Seo Yi-sook plays the role of Son Young Shim, who is another candidate hoping to become mayor and is also the chairman of the Engsung Group, bringing financial clout with him to the race.
The actor appears in Queenmaker after parts in Six Flying Dragons, The Rebel Hong Gil Dong and Hotel Del Luna.
They have also appeared in The Queen’s Umbrella, Nobody Knows, The Empire and will next be featuring in The Good Bad Mother.
Ma Jung Seok – Kim Tae-hoon
Kim Tae-hoon stars as Ma Jung Seok, a political strategist leading the campaign for Baek Jae Min.
The actress is known for her roles in The Man from Nowhere, Worst Woman, The Admiral: Roaring Currents and Navillera.
She will next be appearing in the short film Z, which is currently in post-production.

Seo Min Jeong – Jin Kyung
Jin Kyung takes on the role of Seo Min Jeong, who has been described as a public servant.
Jin has starred in Veteran, Cold Eyes, Assassination, Beasts That Cling to the Straw and Love in Contract.
Carl Yoon – Lee Geung-young
Carl Yoon, who is known as the king of elections, is played by actor Lee Geung-young.
Lee counts credits in The Battleship Island, The Concubine and Sense8: Creating the World.
Other cast members include Kim Byeong-ok, Yoon Ji-hye and Kim Sae-byuk.
Queenmaker will be released on Netflix tomorrow
