Comedy-drama series Last Tango in Halifax has been off-air for years. The BBC show from the inimitable creator Sally Wainwright built up a huge following, who loved following the dysfunctional lives of Celia (played by Anne Reid) and Alan’s (Derek Jacobi) families. Last Tango in Halifax has run for a total of five seasons but there’s been little word about the future of the series and whether there will be a season six.

However, actress Reid has now opened up about the future of the show during an appearance on today’s (March 21) edition of Good Morning Britain.

Speaking to ITV hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, Reid was asked whether there could be more from the programme.

Reid said: “Well, it would be lovely. I know Derek’s up for it and I talked to Sarah [Lancashire].

“I don’t know about Nicola [Walker]. She said, ‘I think a Christmas special would be nice.’”

The actress added: “We wouldn’t do another series, I don’t think. But we might do a Christmas special.”

Last Tango in Halifax fan Balls said: “Christmas special, you heard it here first!” Reid laughed and added: “I would like it.”

Reid’s words suggest there could be more from Last Tango in Halifax, but it will be down to write Wainwright about penning more scripts.

But sadly, it seems there won’t be a full series with viewers only able to savour the story with festive specials.

Celia and Alan share a final dance

Last Tango in Halifax saw Sarah Lancashire’s Caroline adjusting to life with a new job and home as well as navigating a possible new love interest.

There was of course more strife for Gillian (Walker) on the farm as she had to face her past as well as contend with her romance with Robbie (Dean Andrews).

Most recently, Wainwright brought her other big hit series Happy Valley back to screens after a seven-year break.

Despite all the drama, the final episode of the most recent series finished with couple Celia and Alan sharing a kiss and dancing.

The third and final season of the gritty Yorkshire drama propelled Wainwright back into the spotlight.

Along with Last Tango in Halifax and Happy Valley, Wainwright is also the mind behind Gentleman Jack, Scott & Bailey and Son Nefesime Kadar.

According to IMDb, Wainwright is now working on the show The Ballad of Renegade Nell which is in post-production.

Reid was on Good Morning Britain to talk about her new play Marjorie Prime at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London.

The actress plays a woman suffering from dementia, who gets an artificial intelligence which is a replica of her husband when he was younger.

Along with starring in Last Tango in Halifax, Reid has also appeared in ITV’s Sanditon, SAS: Red Notice, The Nest and Hold the Sunset.

She is next going to be appearing in The Trouble with Jessica and The Sixth Commandment, which are both in post-production.
