Love Island viewers unimpressed with close minded fans who ask if Will is gay
Love Island fans have taken issue with viewers who are questioning whether islander Will Young is gay, with some dubbing them “close minded.”
This year’s winter Love Island kicked off last month, with Maya Jama taking over as host from Laura Whitmore.
TikTok farmer Will has been a fan favourite from the get-go, with love for him only increasing after the introduction of his new love, Australian contestant Jessie Wynter.
Will stands out amongst the other lads as being someone who isn’t afraid to mess around, have fun, and, as seen in a recent episode, dance around with Jessie while sporting a fringe skirt.
This week we saw Will, 23, enter the hideaway with Jessie, 26, as they enjoyed some time dressing up in various “saucy” outfits.
“What do you want to see? I’m going to do a fashion show,” Jessie, who Islander Anna-May Robey claims is playing a game, questioned, to which Will responded: “Absolutely everything.”
As Jessie sported racy lingerie, Will could be seen dancing around the room and “getting on my hands and knees and begging for you love.”
A clip of the episode was shared on Love Island’s official Instagram alongside the caption: “A match made in Hideaway heaven.”
In the comments, one fan questioned: “Is Will gay? Just asking.”
“He's gotta be bi at least,” another wrote.
Obviously, someone’s perceived masculinity or femininity is not an indication of their sexuality, which many fans hit back with in the comments.
“Just himself. Not gay because he acts a bit feminine. He enjoys life and his himself. Go willllllll and Jessie,” one fan hit back.
“Why do people think a man is bi or gay just because he has a touch of femininity. Closed minds,” another said, while a third added: “Erm… the homophobia in the comments, bisexuals exist???? And straight feminine people exist, it's not automatically gay.”
According to Grazia, of the 10 Google search queries associated with Will, more than half of them are questions about whether or not he’s gay.
The ITV dating show was the subject of criticism back in 2021 when ITV boss Kevin Lygo said the introduction of LGBTQ+ contestants wouldn’t work because of the show’s format.
"Love Island is a particular thing, of course, it’s about boys and girls coupling up,” he said at the time.
"So if you wanted to do a gay version, or you wanted to widen it, it is discussed and we haven’t yet found a way that would make it suitable for that show."
The claim was quickly branded “lazy” and “easier” by the show’s critics, with many also pointing out how easy it could be to include LGBTQ+ representation on the programme.
