Here, Daily Star takes a closer look at Married At First Sight UK's real life tragedies.

Mother's tragic death

During the latest series of Married At First Sight (MAFS) UK, which began airing on August 29, 2022, viewers saw bride Whitney Hughes break down as she discussed her mum's tragic death.

Whitney's mum, Gillian Williams, died in October 2019 following a car crash on Redbourn Road, St Albans.

It is reported that the road has "claimed countless lives", with Whitney launching a campaign in 2020 called "Make Redbourn Road Safe", followed by an online petition.

Speaking about her mum's death, she could be heard saying on the show: "My mum passed away, she was driving home from work and a man drove into her."

Whitney added: "I really miss her, she was my best friend."

The star also revealed that her mother's death had taught her that "life is so short" and that she had to "just jump right in there" and join the E4 programme.

A photo of mum Gillian was later placed on one of the chairs during her wedding ceremony to husband Duka Cav.

Miscarriage heartbreak

Presenter and MAFS 2021 contestant Amy Christophers was paired up with Josh Christie on the show, with the couple later going their separate ways.

However, during an episode of the E4 reality TV series, the star and presenter revealed that she was previously engaged before, but that she and her fiancé broke off their engagement in 2018.

Following their split, Amy also later found out that she was pregnant with twins.

However, she explained that she encountered further heartbreak when she suffered a miscarriage.

Speaking on the show, she said: "That absolutely broke me.

"The two things I want is marriage and babies and I was so close to having both of those things and it didn’t work out."

She added: "For me the last straw was my mum having a stroke and she nearly died, that was a big eye opener and made me realise as an only child, when my mum goes, who do I have? I want that support system."

Loss of friend

Another 2022 MAFS contestant to have suffered a tragic loss is Jess Potter, who was paired with Pjay Finch on the current series.

The star recently paid tribute to one of her close friends Kali, who died following a fatal collision in Cambridgeshire last year.

Following the tragic incident, Kali's family released a statement, which described her as a "loving and thoughtful" person.

Paying tribute, the family's statement continued: "Kali was adored and loved by family, friends and colleagues.

"There are no words, life will simply never be the same, our hearts are broken."

Jess has since paid tribute to her friend on social media, sharing photographs of her friend's grave on her Instagram stories, showing the grave surrounded by tributes and flowers.

Machete attack

MAFs 2020 star David Pugh was paired with Shareen Geers on the reality TV series – with the couple's romance later coming to an end.

Prior to his appearance on the series however, David suffered a harrowing ordeal after he fought off armed raiders at his Midlands home in 2018.

The star revealed how two years before his appearance on the reality TV series, he fought off five burglers, armed with machetes, using his martial arts training.

David was later left severely injured and in need of medical attention following the horrific incident.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, he said: "I got woken up at three in the morning with the sound of broken glass and doors being kicked in.

"It became an out-and-out battle in my house for about ten minutes. My martial arts training just kicked in. I wasn't being brave. I was very lucky – there were golf clubs, machetes, table legs flying."

Recalling the incident to The Mirror, he also added that he had splits to his head and was covered in blood following the attack.

"We could only assume they saw that, realised we hadn't got any money and thought, 'we have gone too far', and got out of here," said David.

"They must have thought they half-killed me. In retrospect we were probably quite lucky."
