Martin Lewis and Susanna Reid defend Joe Lycett's chaotic Kuenssberg appearance

Martin Lewis and Susanna Reid have defended Joe Lycett’s chaotic appearance on Sunday Wiith Laura Kuenssberg.

The comedian, who has often criticised the government, joined Labour’s Emily Thornberry and former Number 10 staffer Cleo Watson on the BBC’s new flagship politics show on Sunday – and was incredibly sarcastic the whole time.

While some criticised Joe, many applauded his approach, arguing it was the best way to shine a light on the current state of the government.

Addressing the appearance on Good Morning Britain, Susanna asked contributor Andrew Pierce why some were so rattled by Joe’s appearance, and asserted that he made ‘quite a point’ when he mocked Ms Truss saying in an interview that it would be wrong to predict the future.

‘Liz Truss says an interview [that] we don’t know what’s going to happen. We know exactly what’s happening,’ she said.

‘He made quite a funny quip about Rishi Sunak as well,’ Martin pointed out, referring to Joe saying that since Mr Sunak ‘is not going to be Prime Minister, so you may as well have interviewed Peter Andre.’

‘Exactly right!’ Susanna said, after the clip played.

While contributor Andrew Pierce criticised Joe’s appearance, saying it was meant to be a serious show, Kevin Maguire described the comic as ‘funny and bright – right down that yellow shirt.’

‘He’s an intelligent comic,’ Kevin added, admitting he may have ‘overshadowed’ the launch of the new show.

‘You invite a comedian on a programme, expect them to do comedy,’ Martin asserted. ‘And whoever produced that, it was a big risk doing that on the first show when you have both the Prime Ministerial candidate and President Zelensky’s wife doing an interview.’

Sitting on the panel of Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, Joe was asked about the strength of Ms Truss’ position ahead of the new leader of the Conservative party being announced.

In a widely-shared moment, he reflected: ‘I think the haters will say that we’ve had 12 years of the Tories and that we’re sort of at the dregs of what they’ve got available and that Liz Truss is the backwash of the available MPs.

‘I wouldn’t say that because I’m incredibly right wing, but some people might say that.’

As Laura suggested that the ‘consensus’ in politics is often wrong, and we don’t know what’s going to pan out, Joe spoke about ‘predicting the future’.

‘As Liz said there, it would be wrong to predict the future – even though loads of people have predicted that we’re going to have real issues with paying our energy bills. But I think she’s right to say, “Let’s not predict and see what happens next week.” I think she did the right thing there!’
