It came as the Secretary joined Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain to discuss Putin’s latest chilling threat to the west, in which he claimed Russia would “use all resources we have to defend our people.” He also indicated the country was being targeted by the west, which Keegan called him a “liar” for. Susanna Reid hit back, arguing the MP wasn’t being “helpful,” but Keegan warned she “needs to be clear” on information regarding the Russian leader.
Putin has reportedly warned: “We will use all resources we have to defend our people.
“If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, to defend Russia and our people, we will use all means we have. This is not a bluff.
“The territorial integrity of our motherland, our independence and freedom will be secured, I repeat with all the means we have.
“Those who try to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the prevailing winds can turn in their direction.”
Keegan called for calm in the face of Putin’s speech and told ITV viewers he “rewrites history”.
After Good Morning Britain showed Putin’s chilling message, Keegan remarked: “Well, what we heard there is more of Putin’s lies.
“And a complete rewriting of history. We’re very clear that it is Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine.”
She added: “It is a serious threat, it’s one he’s made before and probably will make again. Talk of nuclear war is extremely unhelpful and we would urge calm.”
Reid commented: “Calling him a liar, I think, is not that helpful. I mean, the fact of the matter is-“
Keegan cut in to reply: “He’s not telling the truth, Susanna! We have to be clear, he has said that they did not invade Ukraine. Well, that’s a lie.”
“Okay, that’s fair enough,” Reid responded. “I just wanted to establish what we’re calling lies because-“
“Completely rewriting history!” Keegan continued, repeating: “[It’s] the complete rewriting of history.
“We are here and we need to be very clear on this – and you need to be very clear on this.
“We are here because Russia illegally invaded Ukraine.”
Reid defended herself by dismissing Keegan’s accusations, remarking: “We’ve never not been clear about that…”
“They have also committed many atrocities,” Keegan went on.
“Thousands of their own troops have died in the last six months, which is an extraordinarily high amount of soldiers who have lost their lives.
“And now they’re going to conscript more of the people into this illegal war.
“So it is – it is lies, to reframe it is anything but!”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
