The Irish series ran for three seasons from 2011, but returns annually for Christmas special episodes. Fronted and created by Brendan O’Carroll, who plays comic grandmother Agnes Brown, the series initially resonated with fans across the globe, but has always divided viewers. However, this year’s Christmas episode sparked a backlash from fans who claimed the “upsetting” show had “ruined” Christmas.

Some fans of the show make comparisons to other classic sitcoms and have welcomed the news that the show will return in 2023 with four new instalments.

Mrs Brown’s Boys has previously been successful in Ireland and the UK, but fans seem to have dwindled in recent years.

Having become a Christmas staple, it was no surprise to see the BBC comedy back on Sunday.

Unfortunately, not everyone was impressed by the programme’s festive comeback.

Twitter user @trickthetm wrote: “Family put on this Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special which involved “vampires” *rolls eyes*.”

@Montreal_Celtic quipped: “This Christmas I am thankful for my wife, my daughter and living in a country in which nobody watches Mrs Brown’s Boys.”

One admitted they were a fan until the show “got worse,” with @Th4tB0yF1nn sharing: “Stop I used to love Mrs Browns Boys but then it got worse over the years and now it’s just got such a bad rep it’s really upsetting cause I grew up watching it.”

@da9xt made the bold claim the series return had “ruined” the day, posting: “Mrs Brown’s Boys has arrived to ruin Christmas again.”

@csrandall87 penned: “So we have Ladbaby at number one, another Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special and a f***ing awful government. The world really did end in 2012 and we’re in hell.”

@MrBonMot shared: “It seems the season of goodwill ended when Mrs Brown’s boys started!”

Some enjoyed the one-off episode though, with @sxperhaught stating: “I find it hilarious.”

Speaking last year about the show’s appeal on The One Show, O’Carroll explained: “I think it’s – first of all, she’s hard as nuts.

“As all of our mammies were because they had to be.

“I think there’s two things; she’d help you bury a body, you know if she had to.”

He added: “Although she can be a B***H sometimes, she just loves her kids.

“She absolutely adores her kids and adores her grandkids.

“And I think that’s a redeeming factor for her, she’s full of love. And her best friend is her best friend, and will always be her best friend.”

Talking about the Christmas specials and the upcoming series recently, the actor told The Sun: “That’s what people who come to the show say – ‘Ah, it wouldn’t be Christmas without Mrs Brown.’

“You’re kinda going ‘Oh my God, we established that,’ because in my day that was Morecambe and Wise, it wasn’t Christmas without Morecambe and Wise, so it’s a buzz.”
