Netflixs terrifying new horror series is based on chilling real-life story

Netflix’s new horror series is extra sinister because shockingly, it’s actually based on real-life events.

The Watcher, which American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy produces follows a family who moves into a new home in the idyllic neighbourhood of Westfield, New Jersey – but soon, mega creepy letters start to arrive from a mysterious person “watching” their house.

The Watcher then proceeds to inform the family he is waiting for the house’s “second coming” and is excited about the “young blood” of their children.

But what makes it even scarier is that this isn’t just the brainchild of Murphy – who is also behind Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story – it really happened to a real family.

Back in 2014, Derek and Maria Broaddus bought their dream home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, NJ.

But before long, they received a letter addressed to “The New Owner”. Eventually, the family told their story in The Cut and even shared the first letter in its entirety.

It read: "Dearest new neighbour at 657 Boulevard, Allow me to welcome you to the neighbourhood.

"657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming.

“My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s.

“It is now my time. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls of 657 Boulevard? Why are you here? I will find out."

Another read: “Do you need to fill the house with the young blood I requested? Better for me.

“Was your old house too small for the growing family? Or was it greed to bring me your children? Once I know their names I will call to them and draw them too [sic] me."

Once The Watcher was able to identify the couple’s children, they got the authorities involved including the FBI – but to no avail.

Slight spoiler alert coming.

Eventually, experts were able to test some DNA from one of the letters which led them to believe it was from a woman.

Everyone in the locality offered up DNA samples except for two women.

The case remains open…
