Netflix's 'The Empress' Season 2 Is Officially a GO

ICYMI, the Netflix gods have given us a new historical fiction drama obsession to fill the long, lonely hours between rewatches of Bridgerton. If you haven’t already binged the first season of The Empress, do yourself a favor and take a moment to add it to the top of your watch list now.

Season 1 of The Empress focused on the early years of Duchess Elisabeth of Bavaria (better known to those close to her as “Sisi”), an Austrian empress who had the kind of tragic life story that feels almost tailor-made for the spotlight. In the first season, 16-year-old Sisi moves to Vienna to marry Emperor Franz Joseph (who was originally engaged to her sister, because, as we said, her story is full of TV-worthy drama) and ends up swimming in courtly drama and schemes. It’s a vibe, and you won’t be sorry you watched it.

And with such an addictive and utterly drama-filled season 1, its no wonder that viewers are already clamoring for details about the future of the series. Here’s everything we know (so far) about Netflix’s plans for The Empress season 2.

Will there be a season 2 of The Empress on Netflix?

YES! Everyone say, “Thank you, Netflix!” The streamer announced today that The Empress is indeed getting a season 2.

When will season 2 of The Empress be released?

That date is firmly locked until more time has passed, but for premiere date clues, we can look to the streaming giant’s track record. If we look to Bridgerton as a timing blueprint, there was a 1+ year gap between the premieres of season 1 (in December 2020) and season 2 (in March 2022). Netflix’s other major historical drama, The Crown, typically has gaps of between 1 and 2 years between seasons. If Netflix follows suit with The Empress, we shouldn’t expect a second season until fall 2023 at the earliest.

Who will star in season 2 of The Empress?

In season 1 of The Empress, German actress Devrim Lingnau stars Elisabeth alongside

Philip Froissant as Emperor Franz Joseph, but it’s hard to say what the full cast of season 2 will look like (especially since the series has already made some significant changes to the true history of their romance). That said, it’s hard to see the series continuing without at least Devrim and Philip on board.

We’ll update this post as more details about The Empress season 2 become available.
