Piers Morgan credits Meghan Markle with Talk TV career after leaving GMB
Piers Morgan has said that he wouldn't have won his TRIC Award without Meghan Markle after sarcastically thanking her during his acceptance speech this week. The Talk TV host picked up the award for Interview of the Year at Tuesday's TRIC Awards, telling the audience that he wanted to thank Meghan Markle as "without her contribution to my career", he wouldn't be at TalkTV.
Speaking to OK! exclusively after his win, Piers added: "Well, obviously without her I wouldn't be at Talk TV. So again, thank you Meghan."
The presenter was previously an anchor on Good Morning Britain for six years before his exit in 2021. Piers left the show after refusing to apologise for comments he made on-air about the Duchess of Sussex following her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Discussing Meghan's comment that she "didn't want to be alive anymore", Piers said that he didn't "believe a word" that she said. ITV released a statement shortly afterwards, saying that it was "committed to mental health and wellbeing".
The following day, Piers stormed off the Good Morning Britain set following a clash with contributor Alex Beresford over his comments before ITV announced that the broadcaster would be leaving for good.
"Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain," ITV wrote in a statement. "ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."
The 58-year-old joined Talk TV last year as the anchor of Piers Morgan Uncensored and has since interviewed Andrew Tate, Kanye West and Rishi Sunak.
A source revealed earlier this year that Piers felt "let down" by his former Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid. This came after Piers tweeted that it would have "been nice to see the same solidarity" Gary Linekar's colleagues showed him during his BBC suspension.
"Piers’ tweet was a cheeky dig at Susanna,” our source claimed. “He feels not just the TV executives should have been more supportive, but his co-hosts – including Susanna – should have been, too. No one came out and backed him, only his family, no one he worked side by side with. He felt let down."
The Talk TV host took part in a BBC interview with Amol Rajan back in May, in which he spoke about his heated debate with Alex Beresford on GMB. Recalling their on-screen argument, he said that he objected to someone on the team making "a very personal attack" on him.
"Just for the record, I think he was a treacherous little p***k," he added.
Other winners at the TRIC Awards 2023 included EastEnders star Danielle Harold, Peter Crouch and Good Morning Britain. Meanwhile, Judi Love and Kelsey Parker were among those walking the red carpet.
