Points Of View complaints – romps, lack of tennis at Wimbledon to ugly giraffe

For more than 60 years, BBC Points Of View has been airing the complaints of TV viewers across the country.

From raunchy antics on screen, to "hideous" giraffes, unrealistic coffee drinking in soaps and a lack of ballroom dancing on Strictly, no topic has been off the cards.

There have even been complaints about Points Of View itself.

As the popular programme turns 61 years old, Daily Star takes a look at some of the most outrageous complaints submitted to Points Of View – both on the show and on its social media accounts.

Complaining about other people's complaints

Fans of BBC series Versailles were sent into a rage in 2017, after Points Of View received complaints about the BBC drama before the second series had even aired.

Versailles, which followed the life of a young King Louis XIV, starred actors including Alexander Vlahos and George Blagden and ran for three series between 2015 to 2018,

However, its raunchy sex scenes often attracted much criticism and ahead of its second series, the official Points Of View Twitter account asked followers: "There have been complaints even before it has aired! Are you tuning into the 2nd series of Versailles on @BBCTwo now?"

Some continued to complain about the series, with one viewer saying: "Everything on a grand scale except for the script!"

However, most complained about the people making the complaints to Points Of View, with one fan saying: "Don't watch it if it's too risque for you! Simple!"

"It's ridiculous!" said another, while a third added: "It's a TV show. If you don't like it don't watch and let the rest of us enjoy! Series one was just amazing #Versailles."

The lesson – never mess with a fandom.

Question Time 'doesn't answer the questions'

BBC show Question Time allows studio audiences to pose questions to politicians on the issues of the day.

Hosted by David Dimbleby, Jeremy Paxman and later Fiona Bruce, the panels also regularly feature significant figures from the media and entertainment industries.

However, Points Of View has received complaints about the topical panel show, with some viewers complaining that Question Time does not answer the questions at all.

One complaint said: "I enjoy Question Time but I find it a bit infuriating because it is called Question Time but doesn't seem to answer the questions."

Not enough tennis at Wimbledon

It's one of the most anticipated sporting events in the BBC calendar, but some viewers feel that there is not enough tennis shown on the channel's Wimbledon coverage.

Comments about Wimbledon have been submitted to the programme since it began, including one saying: "Worth the license fee, if only to see the final between Borg and McEnroe. Fantastic."

However, some viewers want to see less of the crowd, with a more recent complaint saying: "Is it possible that with Wimbledon just around the corner we get fewer pointless shots of the crowd fanning themselves, taking pictures. wearing silly getups etc?"

Other viewers complained about the BBC not reprimanding the tennis players for their actions toward the umpires, with another adding: "The BBC does a disservice to the nation, and especially to the thousands of school children who watched Wimbledon 80, by filming shots of loutish millionaires of the tennis circuits screaming at the umpires, and by subsequently fawning on them in interviews instead of using this unique opportunity to tell them how much their behaviour on court damages the sporting instincts of the young people who hero worship them."

Strictly Come 'pole' Dancing

Strictly Come Dancing recently returned to our screens at the weekend, but even the popular competition has had its fair share of complaints from viewers.

Known for its sexy outfits and sometimes even racier performances – depending on the style of dance – viewers took to Points Of View to complain about the choreography.

One complained: "Maybe they should just move it to a pole-dancing club because it's got nothing to do with ballroom dancing."

The complaints have even flowed over away from Points Of View, with some viewers submitting comments to the BBC Trust's Complaints and Appeal Board.

Any viewer can lodge an official complaint, which might be passed up to the BBC Trust’s Complaints and Appeals Board if it relates to anything other than editorial standards.

Complaints submitted included viewers requesting that a version of Strictly Come Dancing should be available that does not included the audience clapping.

The reason? Because they felt the audience had "poor timing," when clapping along to the music.

Blankety Blank 'spoilt'

Many BBC programmes have been rebooted in recent years, including popular celebrity game show Blankety Blank.

Not every one is happy to see the show return though, with many taking to the Points Of View Twitter account to complain.

When asked if viewers enjoyed the return of Blankety Blank, the Points Of View were not too positive, with one saying: "Wish the BBC would show from Sir Terry Wogan onwards. It's spoilt now, rather have repeats than this!"

"No, it's old hat now and just too silly. Why keep bringing it back?," asked another.

A third commented: "I think it's a total banal programme, sinking to the lowest common denominator, full of inappropriate innuendo. I would never watch."

Not everyone agreed though, with some showing love for the programme, saying: "Loved it. Bradley Walsh is the master of light entertainment. So quick off the mark."

Unrealistic coffee drinkers

Every soap has its regular pub and cafe – but who knew that they could cause so many viewer complaints?

One viewer complained about the unrealistic coffee drinkers in one BBC soap, saying: "Watching EastEnders tonight., Every time the actors have a cup of coffee it is so obvious the cup is empty."

If you thought viewers only complained about EastEnders to Points Of View though, then you will be mistaken, as the BBC Trust’s Complaints and Appeals Board also receives its fair share too.

Complaints have ranged from one viewer thinking the characters spend "too much time in pubs and cafes," as it would cost them "too much."

Meanwhile, another suggested that one restaurant kitchen scene encouraged "bad behaviour" because of a lack of characters wearing hair nets.

BBC presenters 'many thanks'

BBC presenters are always there to keep us up to date with the latest news, but some viewers do not understand why they appear to keep thanking one another.

While the polite mannerisms are a mark of respect to one another on set, some viewers complained and asked why they need to keep thanking one another constantly – sometimes multiple times in a sentence.

One complaint to Points Of View said: "When switching from presenter to presenter, how many ‘thanks’ does this take? You would think one would suffice. Not for BBC presenters.

"Apparently ‘many thanks’ and ‘many many thanks’ are required. I’m just waiting for my first ‘many many many thanks."

'Hideous' giraffe

From Antiques Roadshow to Bargain Hunt and reality TV, BBC viewers are regularly exposed to stunning works of art through the channel's programming.

One art competition caused quite a stir however, when a portrait of a giraffe won the grand prize.

This did not go down well with one viewer, who according to The Radio Times, said that the giraffe painting was "hideous."

"I am absolutely mortified at the result of this programme that I have watched with enthusiasm each week. How anyone with any knowledge or experience of art could choose the hideous final painting of a giraffe is beyond me," they said.

Points Of View itself

Of course, the most outrageous complaints have to be about Points Of View itself.

Not content with complaining about other BBC programmes, some viewers have taken issue with the show they complain to.

One said: "How much is it a PR exercise with no direct impact on BBC output – simply a time filler masquerading under the guise of concern and response?

"From the point of the BBC, what is the point of Points of View?"
