Saturday Night Takeaway fans feel conned after documentary reveals filming secrets

Fans of Saturday Night Takeaway were left “cheated” after a new documentary offered them a look behind the scenes at how the show is made.

Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, hosted by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, first aired in 2002 and has been beloved by the British public ever since.

With hilarious stunts and genius segments, the show also features some of the biggest talents around, with past cameos including former X Factor star Fleur East, Kerry Katona, Daisy May Cooper, Helen Flanagan and Alesha Dixon.

Saturday Night Takeaway: Behind the Screens follows Ant and Dec, who also host I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, as they peel back the curtain on the show.

The special shows how celebrity guest stars are booked, how challenges are rehearsed and how the crew prepares for the live show.

But the revelation frustrated some fans who thought specific segments were live when they were actually prerecorded.

They discovered that Ant and Dec’s End of the Show Show with singer Tom Grennan in a moving dressing room was actually filmed in advance and required several takes to nail the complicated choreography.

This left a sour taste in the mouths of fans who believed that the show-stopping performance was all live, with many taking to Twitter to voice their distaste.

"I thought the End of the Show Show was always live," one fan quipped on social media.

Another said: "Who else is disappointed in Saturday Night Takeaway to find out the End of the Show Show was pre-recorded and not live? I feel conned!"

In contrast, other fans argued that it’s “common sense” that the most complicated parts of the show would be rehearsed and recorded before the live show.

One person said: "You can always tell when Saturday Night Takeaway is live or not. When it's not live they take the 'live' off the top left-hand corner, for those who don't know.”

"I thought this was common knowledge. Surely people realise that some of the stuff they do in the End of the Show Show can't be done live in the confines of a studio,” another said.

Another notable issue centred around the iconic Ant vs Dec challenges, which were widely considered to be a secret until the moment the hosts were let in on the secret.

One person raged: "Thought Ant vs Dec was kept secret and they did not know anything about the challenges, and yet there they were actually PLANNING one of the games, I actually feel cheated."

"Can I just say how disappointed I was watching Saturday Night Takeaway behind the scenes, we are always told they don't know what the challenges are for Ant vs Dec but in the show they watched it being practiced. Slightly ruined it now, sorry boys,” another scathed.

That being said, the documentary has also been applauded for offering a realistic view of the show.
