Former England rugby player Mike Tindall is taking part in this year’s series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here. He is the first member of the Royal Family to feature in the show’s 20-year history and, since the latest series started over a week and a half ago, he has given viewers insight into life with the Firm and shared anecdotes with his campmates between trials.

Speaking on Monday night’s episode to comedians Seann Walsh and Babatunde Aleshe, Zara Tindall’s husband confessed he enjoyed “exaggerated dancing” at special occasions and admitted that he often tears his clothing.

He explained in one instance: “Zara had like a 30th birthday, it was a disco 70s themed one, I was dancing on the dance floor, I had like flares on, full outfit but it was quite tight, nothing ever fits – rugby player’s bum and legs – so I was dancing with my mother-in-law and I did a sl*t drop in front of my mother-in-law [Princess Anne].’

He continued: “Ripped my trousers, straight in front of her. It happened to be that my boxers that I had on at that time said ‘nibble my nuts’.”

“As I’ve turned round, she’s gone, ‘I’d rather not.’ I’ve gone, ‘I’m going’ and walked off.”

Ahead of the anecdote, one royal expert claimed that the Princess Royal will be thinking, “what on earth is Mike doing” on the show. Royal journalist and author Katie Nicholl told True Royalty TV’s The Royal Beat that it is “unthinkable” for Anne to be watching her son-in-law take part in the reality series.

She explained: “Knowing Princess Anne…The idea that she’ll be sitting, cheering Mike on is absolutely unthinkable. I think she’ll be thinking, ‘What on earth is he doing?’. And that’s probably the thoughts of most of the senior Royals.

“He’s making a lot of money out of it. I do think this all leads to the much bigger question about Royals and commercialisation. We dedicate so much time to discussing Harry and his commercial deals. How is this any different? It’s not. But I think the point is, this really crystallises Charles’s argument and vision for a slimmed-down monarchy.”

Have Mike Tindall’s comments ‘damaged’ the Royal Family?

Former BBC royal correspondent Michael Cole discussed Mike’s royal revelations on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, November 16. He said that although he was a “nice guy” he was “diminishing” and “demeaning” the Royal Family.

He explained: “Mike is a nice guy. He is a world cup winning hero, he married the late Queen’s granddaughter. He has got a lovely family, he is a nice guy. What on earth is he doing demeaning himself and diminishing the royal family in this show?”

Host Susanna Reid replied: “Does it diminish the Royal Family or does it show that Princess Anne has got a sense of humour?”

Mr Cole continued: “Well, she won’t be welcoming that. She won’t be welcoming that little story because she has history herself.”

Mike’s best friend and former rugby star James Haskell, who has also appeared on the show, defended Mike’s choices and said: “I don’t think he has exploded.

“I think what he has done is drawn the curtain back and said something very funny I think it humanises Princess Anne, who has got an amazing sense of humour.

“I have seen it first hand [and] she wouldn’t have batted an eyelid, I don’t think it would have even registered. It was a joke and it was funny.”

After Mike’s participation in the show was announced one royal expert claimed that his decision to take part was unlikely to have a negative impact on the Firm.

Cele Otnes, a US-based marketing professor and royal author, told Express.co.uk: “I don’t think it will have much impact on the royal brand, as Princess Anne’s children have no titles and aren’t working royals.”
