Strictly Come Dancing confirms major format shake-up ahead of 21st TV series

Strictly Come Dancing is set to launch a major shake-up to the beloved BBC ballroom dancing show this year to mark 100 years of the legendary TV channel.

The annual celebrity dancing competition generally follows a strict week by week structure as the couples are whittled down to the final three with fan-favourite themes celebrated on the show throughout the series.

Some of the themes Strictly fans look forward to each year include the likes of Halloween week, Musicals week, Movies week and the infamous Blackpool ballroom stint.

But this year, fans have been warned to expect a new theme in which all the dancers will be tasked to perform an intricate performance to some of the most iconic theme tunes from the BBC’s most famous shows to celebrate the centenary.

There will also be two BBC-themes professional routines starring Strictly Come Dancing ’s slew of professional dancers across the series.

One routine is understood to be dedicated to the broadcaster’s natural history shows while another will see the pro dancers “crashing” its flagship programmes.

Strictly executive producer Sarah James said: “We know how much viewers love the Strictly themed weeks so it’s fantastic to be able to announce a new one, celebrating the BBC’s centenary.

“It’s the icing on the cake to be able to confirm that we are returning to the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom this year, we can’t wait to get back to Blackpool!”

The show has been unable to visit its northern home for two years due to the coronavirus and it’s fair to say fans can’t wait for the stars to return for the glamorous ballroom once more.

Earlier this month, BBC bosses announced the complete line-up for 21st series of the dance series with Kym Marsh, Will Mellor and Helen Skelton among the stars set to take part this autumn.

Also taking part is James Bye, Tony Adams and Hamza Yassim alongside musician Fleur East, Molly Rainford, Ellie Taylor and Matt Goff.

Joining them on the star-studded bill are Tyler West, Ellie Simmonds, Kaye Adams and Richie Anderson.

The news follows a pre-recorded launch show that is set to be filmed on Wednesday, September 7, where the celebrities are officially paired up with their professional dace partners.
