Coronation Street star Will Mellor and his professional partner Nancy Xu were crushed when they were sent home in the Strictly Come Dancing 2022 semi-final. Will was harshly criticised by head judge Shirley Ballas for his Paso Doble and landed himself at the bottom of the leaderboard on Sunday night. However, dance expert Doctor Jill Rose Jacobs is convinced an obstacle cost Will his place in the coveted final.

Will and Nancy’s Paso Doble to Uccen – DWTS Remix by TaalbiBrothers gained them 32 points out of a possible 40.

While they managed to bounce back with their Couple’s Choice routine which paid tribute to Manchester, they still ended up in the dance-off.

The duo performed against Fleur East and Vito Coppola, but the judges chose to save Fleur.

The grand finale is just days away, but Doctor Jill believes Will would have been a finalist if the costume department made changes.

Doctor Jill explained: “Without question, the weakest routine of the evening was Will’s Paso Doble, which I would argue was undercut by the costume.

“Will is observably emotional, though he may not be analytical about the effect of the costumes on his performances.

“For the Paso Doble, in which Will’s role was a strong and passionate matador, he wore a mesh shirt, flower-applique vest, satin cummerbund and ill-fitting pants.

“Moreover, Will opened the routine with a bullfighters’ cape that was by far too small ‘to catch the air’, the critique from the judges.”

She continued to Heart Bingo: “As someone with flamenco training, I am certain that size does matter.

“The matador uses the cape to anger the bull and clearly would have a large enough cape to keep the animal a good distance from his body.

“Will’s performance had other technical dance errors, as did other contestants, yet his routine was undercut by the costume.

Will opened up about his elimination on It Takes Two earlier this week where he got very emotional.

He told host Rylan Clark: “I’m just human and if anybody meets me, you get to meet me.

“I don’t have another person I can put on and I was disappointed because I’ve worked so hard and we’ve got so far in a competition.

“The last thing I wanted to do was to get it wrong that night.”

Helen Skelton, Hamza Yassin, Molly Rainford and Fleur will be battling it out for the Glitterball Trophy on Saturday night.

They all have to perform three dances each during the final and will have to win the public over to be crowned the champion.

Hamza is currently the bookmakers’ favourite to win this year’s milestone series.

Fleur is the only celebrity to be awarded 40 points for a routine this year, so will anyone else get full marks this weekend?

Strictly Come Dancing’s final airs on BBC One at 7.05pm on Saturday.
