Susanna Reid left her Good Morning Britain co-star Ed Balls hosting alone as she stepped out of the studio to comfort the mum of missing X Factor Celebrity star Levi Davis.

Singer and rugby player Levi was last seen in Barcelona at the end of October and has been missing since then.

His mum Julie was on the ITV show, opening up about her heartbreak as she revealed she was "trying to take one day at a time".

Susanna – who has three children of her own – was emotional as they talked.

Julie broke down at one point, pausing as she fought tears, and Susanna leaned over and held her hand.

"Just before he left, there was a message that – maybe the powers up above – that just said to me, just give him a hug as you don't know if it'll be your last," Julie said tearfully.

Susanna reminded Julie there was “so much effort” being put into the search for her son, saying the police were on it and that there were signs on lampposts all over Barcelona.

At the end of the interview, Susanna left the studio to spend some time with Levis’s mum.

After an ad break Ed was at the desk alone, and explained that Susanna was backstage with Julie.

Later, TV star Lorraine Kelly appeared on GMB to give details of what was on her own show – which follows in the schedule – and she praised Susanna for how good she'd been with Julie.

Susanna said the story had moved everyone in the studio and that she'd just wanted to put an arm around Julie and console her.

Viewers said they were also upset by the story.
