Speaking about the casting process for The Bay season four, producer Catherine Oldfield said: “In some ways it was extremely easy as I’ve wanted to work with Joe Armstrong for years. Every time I’ve tried he’s been busy elsewhere so I was overjoyed when I discovered he was available.

“We offered him the part and he very kindly said yes. [Writer] Daragh [Carville] and I were so thrilled. He is so brilliant in this show, I can’t begin to describe how fantastic he is. He’s brought such depth and complexity to the part of Dean. It’s a really moving and truthful performance, the audience will really engage with him.”

She went on to say: “With the rest of the cast we were really lucky. Dargah writes such beautiful characters anyway and our lovely casting team Jessica Mescall and Kelly Valentine Hendry, find us brilliant people.

“We are always looking for people you haven’t seen before so we can make Morecambe feel fresh and that we’re not putting in the same people you’ve seen before.

“We also try and cast people you may know but have perhaps not seen in a role like this before, so they have a chance to do something a bit different.

“For example Claire Goose joined this series; she is an amazing actress but she’s playing a part I’ve never seen her play before. It was a real joy to see another side to her craft. It’s also really exciting when you find new talent and you’re able to offer them substantial parts.”

The Bay season 4 airs on ITV1 on Wednesdays at 9pm and is streaming as a boxset on ITVX
