In the almost 40 years since the release of The Goonies, a sequel has been trying to get made by those who worked on the original. Back at the turn of the century director Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg had a story they both liked, but couldn’t get it green-lit at Warner Bros.

In the years since, the filmmaker and stars like Sean Astin have said things like The Goonies 2 “is absolute certainty”, but we’re still not there yet.

A big blow for the campaign came in 2021, when Donner died at 91, which Corey Feldman said earlier this year at the Fanboy Expo Knoxville, “makes it a lot harder to make that happen.”

The filmmaker had been working on Lethal Weapon 5 before his death, which Mel Gibson might end up directing. However, fans should “never say die” to The Goonies 2.

Express.co.uk caught up with Robert Davi, star of James Bond movie Licence To Kill, Die Hard and The Goonies.

He famously played one of the film’s villains Jake Fratelli, who we last saw being arrested at the end of the treasure hunting adventure.

Interestingly, The Goonies 2 is listed on his IMDB with a release date of 2027, so what’s going on? We asked Davi to find out.

Davi admitted: “Y’know that’s been there for 10,000 years, who knows!”

It appears that the sequel’s IMDB page is hopeful speculation, but the actor is certainly up for reprising his role as Jake if another film was ever greenlit.

He said: “Oh yeah, if everybody else was on board and it was a good script. I’m sad that Dick Donner is not there because he was a huge force in that.”

Certainly, the death of the director is a blow to the franchise, but given that Lethal Weapon 5 is going ahead, surely another director could step in and make a worthy legacy sequel?
