Amazon’s hit comedy-drama The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is expected to return to screens in 2023 with the highly anticipated fifth and final season. Ahead of its comeback, Shirley Maisel star Caroline Aaron paid a touching tribute to Michael Zegen who starred as her son Joel Maisel.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel came to a surprising finale after Moishe Maisel (played by Kevin Pollak) was rushed to hospital after a heart attack.

The medical emergency was triggered after his son Joel revealed his girlfriend Mei Lin (Stephanie Hsu) was pregnant.

This was a big deal for the traditional family as she wasn’t Jewish, however, worries soon eased after Moishe survived the heart attack.

Joel was concerned it was his fault, but thankfully Moishe was pleased for his son and reassured him that he wasn’t the cause of the heart attack.

Viewers are yet to see how his traditional and no-nonsense mother Shirley Maisel will react to the news.

Ahead of the release of season five, Shirley star Caroline Aaron spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk and opened up about the highly anticipated instalment.

The actress also detailed her relationship with the cast behind the scenes and paid a heartfelt tribute to her colleague Michael.

She shared: “Tony and I have been friends for 30 years, so Tony was not new to me and Kevin was not new to me but Rachel and Michael.

“I feel like Michael is my son, I have a picture of Michael and my son standing side by side, they are my boys.”

As the upcoming season will be the final instalment of the series, Caroline admitted: “That’s going to be so bittersweet when I say goodbye to everyone.”

News of the show coming to an end came as a shock for fans who wanted to see more of Midge Maisel’s (Rachel Brosnahan) story as a woman excelling in comedy during the 50s.

The announcement came in February with a statement from the Head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke.

She stated: “I can’t wait for fans and our worldwide Prime Video audience to savour each moment as we embark on the culmination of this groundbreaking and unforgettable series.”

As for Shirley’s reaction to an unexpected grandchild, Caroline also teased: “Well, I think she’s not going to be happy about the choice.

“I think that ultimately the best part of Shirley is that she just wants her children to be happy.”

Caroline continued: “I think she will work very hard to get Mei to convert and certainly to raise this child Jewish and that will be very important to her

“That probably won’t be her decision but she’s going to try and make it her decision if she has her way.

“But I think that ultimately, Shirley embraces life and would never reject her son or anybody that he loved, if they were going to be part of her family, they’re going to be part of her family,” she added to Express.co.uk.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel seasons 1-4 are available on Amazon Prime Video.
