The One Show host Alex Jones came face to face with ex-boyfriend Steve Jones, interviewing him about his latest book and leaving viewers to pick up on the “awkward tension”.

Steve and Alex were in a relationship from 1999 to 2002 when they met and worked together on the Channel 4 show Rise.

However, they reportedly split after Steve “stole” an interview from Alex with a Hollywood A-lister.

The pair reunited on Tuesday evening, where Jermaine Jenas introduced: “Right, now you will know our next guest as one of the presenters for Formula One but tonight he is changing lanes and entering the world of publishing, it’s Steve Jones.”

Alex clapped and exclaimed: “Nice to see you, nice to see you,” before Steve went on to discuss his latest fiction book.

He explained: “Formula One gave me the gift of time itself, one lonely hotel room after the next, long-haul flights after the next so it has given me loads of time.

“I kind of wasted the first few years of not using that time, I was scratching my head ‘What can I do in this time’ and obviously the book came along and it has been fantastic ever since.”

Alex jumped in and noted: “As a prolific reader though, you definitely are good at writing. I have read a bit of the book and it has me hooked.”

Steve teased: “What page are you on Jones?” to which she added: “Maybe a quarter of the way through?”

Despite the pair exchanging some banter with one another, viewers of the show noted the awkward tension between the two.

They also picked up on the fact that when Steve spoke about his new book, he kept his gaze tightly gripped on Jermaine and would fleetingly look at Alex.

Twitter user James Nable said: “Steve can’t even look Alex in the eye! He’s glaring at Jermaine.”

Another used echoed: “OMG you could cut the tension with a knife between Alex and Steve.”

@SallyMrsMally noted: “They had a brutal breakup but fair play to them for being the bigger people and actually coming together for an interview like this.”

@FonayNay commented: “I’d hate to have to interview my ex on how successful they had been… good on them for being professional thought.” (sic)

Alex previously opened up about her split with Steve on an episode of Dish podcast with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett.

She explained: “Normally [Rise] would call in the morning and ask to come and do an interview or junket.

“I was staying in his [Steve’s] flat at the time when I was working in London and he picked up the landline and said ‘Al’s not here.

“She’s not feeling well, she’s had to go back to Cardiff’ – I was in Topshop. So he did the interview.”

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
