The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades shares unusual item he snuck past royal security
Jay Blades on how he got a packed lunch into the King’s Coronation
Jay Blades and his The Repair Shop team visited Dumfries House in Scotland for a one-off episode to mark the BBC’s centenary.
The episode was filmed when Charles was still the Prince of Wales and initially aired back in October 2022.
During their visit, King Charles needed help with an 18th-century bracket clock and a piece made for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee by British ceramics maker Wemyss Ware.
He said the damaged 19th-century ceramic piece fell over when someone was opening a window and that “they didn’t own up”.
Jay recently joined ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly to discuss his upcoming new series Jay Blades: History Of The East End but couldn’t help talking about his experience.
Lorraine began: “Look I have not spoken to you since you went to the coronation. Now is it true that you took a packed lunch in? How did you get that through security?”
Jay explained: “Yeah I did! The security was really nice to me, I think it’s the glasses, I think that is what does it, make me look intelligent so I just walked through.
“No I got checked and everything but we had to be at Westminster Abbey for 7:30 [am] and the hotel I was staying in didn’t start breakfast until eight o’clock. So they made me a goody bag.
“It was quite nice, and then someone I met when they were doing an interview, they had some gummy bears in their bag and they tipped them in.

“You need a pudding after your breakfast don’t you,” he teased.
When Jay first received his invitation to the coronation, he admitted he was very surprised and told BANG Showbiz: “Whoever thinks that they’re gonna get an invite where the King says to you, ‘I want you to be at my party,’ that doesn’t happen that often.
“Someone put it to me like this, they said that you are one in 2,200 people in the world that was invited.
“So that means you’re proper special. On ‘The Repair Shop’ we fixed two things for him and those were successful.

“Mainly I’m working with him on his project which is The Prince’s Foundation by being an ambassador for that and championing all the work that they do.”
Jay’s new series consists of three one-hour episodes as the star delves into the unique past of his neighbourhood in London’s East End.
During his look at his past, he will find out more about the people that made East London so special, from lawmakers to lawbreakers and everyone in between.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
