Toyah opens up about her rape in emotional Corrie scenes

As Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) tries to look to the future after being raped by Aaron Sandford (James Craven) in Coronation Street, she finds a friend in Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor), who knows exactly what she’s going through.

In 2001, Toyah was raped in an alleyway by a man called Phil Simmonds.

She was found by Jason Grimshaw and taken to Les and Janice, who then called the police.

At first, Toyah couldn’t remember who attacked her, which led to Phil pretending to help her through the ordeal, so the truth wasn’t discovered.

After other Weatherfield residents were questioned by the police, including Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne), the pieces fell into place for Toyah when she heard Phil calling out her name, which meant she recognised the voice as the one she heard before the attack.

Phil denied everything at first, but the police then found his DNA on Toyah’s clothes.

In the present day, Amy’s situation changes dramatically this week as when the libel case involving her, Aaron and Eric, sees her attempt to write a retraction statement, convinced too many people are suffering throughout the process, she shows it to Aaron, who points out it doesn’t make any sense.

This winds Amy up, so she tells Aaron that he should have a go as making sense of a pack of lies is somewhat difficult.

Aaron sits down to write the statement on Amy’s behalf, causing him to go through the night in question for the very first time.

In the aftermath, Amy attempts to find a new focus and tells Summer (Harriet Bibby) that she intends to get back into her university work.

Sadly, because of how much studying she has missed, Amy’s tutor reveals that she needs to repeat the whole year.

This leaves Amy wondering whether she should just drop out, but she’s given food for thought when Summer tells her that she’ll be repeating her year as well.

As the week continues, Amy is approached by Toyah, who opens up about her assault and says that Amy would benefit from counselling.

But what will she do?

It will certainly help to talk to someone, but is that the next step Amy wants to take?
