Tyrone gets Fiz a 'horrendous' Christmas present that stunned Corrie star
Poor Tyrone (Alan Halsall) – he spends most of this Christmas in Coronation Street trying to do something lovely for Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) and getting everything completely wrong.
His first mistake is trying to plan a big secret wedding for Christmas Day. That would be a logistical nightmare for anyone, but Tyrone isn’t worried.
‘in his mind nothing can go wrong so therefore he just plans it all off the cuff,’ Alan Halsall told us. ‘He doesn’t think of any eventuality that it won’t go perfectly to his plan. It’s all in good spirit – he just wants the best and wants Fiz to have that great day that he thinks she deserves but of course he hasn’t thought it through very well. I think he’s got all these great intentions but things just get away from him. he’s very easily led and he definitely is in this situation as well.’
One thing he gets badly wrong is to try to throw Fiz off the scent of the huge surprise he has in store by making minimal attempt to get in the Christmas spirit. To Fiz’s horror he tries to persuade her that they don’t need to have turkey and all the trimmings this year and tries to get her to settle for pizza – knowing, of course, that there’ll be food at the wedding.
And when it comes to Fiz’s Christmas gift, Alan Halsall couldn’t believe the terrible present that Tyrone presents to his beloved.
‘This is one of the moments where I read the script, and what Tyrone gives to Fiz on Christmas Day, and I burst out laughing,’ he recalled. ‘Then we tried to film it and we burst out laughing again. I mean, it’s horrendous! It’s an awful present.’
Later Tyrone comes downstairs with Hope (Isabella Flanagan) and Ruby (Macy Alabi), all dressed in their wedding finery and ready to surprise Fiz with her dream day. But she’s gone – and she’s left her phone behind. And that’s when it really hits Tyrone that he hadn’t really thought everything through.
Alan described what’s running through his character’s head at that point.
‘He hasn’t thought about this, that’s the point,’ he said.
‘He clearly thought that everything was going to go really smoothly and exactly how he planned and we all know that’s not the case. He walks into an empty room and just a note there, Fiz has gone and he can’t get hold of her on the phone and he thinks “What do I do next? I’ve got people giving up their Christmas Day to spend it with us. What’s going to happen? Are we going to get married in time?” Everything’s rushing through his head because he hasn’t thought about any eventuality other than it all going exactly how he wanted it to.’
What’s happened to Fiz? Will the wedding ever happen?
