Vera's Brenda Blethyn breaks silence on Kenny Doughty's replacement after quitting Aidan Healy role | The Sun
VERA star Brenda Blethyn has opened up about where the hit series will go next after the shock departure of Kenny Doughty who plays Aidan Healy.
The future of ITV1 detective drama was left hanging in the balance last week when actor Kenny Doughty quit the show after eight years.
As he announced the news on Instagram, Kenny paid tribute to his co-star Brenda, 77, who he dubbed: “The perfect leading star,” adding that he was “lucky” to have her as a friend.
She didn’t react publicly to the shock revelations at the time, but as fan theories have continued to develop the veteran star has now spoken out.
One fan Tweeted her to ask: "But please, Ms Blethyn, put me and millions of others out of our misery… Will you be doing another series of Vera? Hoping and praying that the answer is Yes!”
She replied with a simple: “Yes.” The revelations didn’t stop there. Another fan asked her on who could be replacing the character of Aiden Healy, saying: “That's fab news but have to say that I'm devastated that @kennydoughty isn't returning…..Whoever replaces him they have big boots to fill Kenny will be missed xx.”

Brenda then teased fans with a rather cryptic reply of: “I promise you won’t be disappointed.”
In the wake of the news last week, fan theories quickly developed over who could replace Aidan Healy on Vera.
Speculation was rife that Mark Edwards (Riley Jones) – who has starred on the show since the beginning will step up into the more prestigious part.
Another idea was that Joe Ashworth (played by David Leon) who was Vera’s sidekick from series one to four, would reprise his role.

The overarching theme on the Facebook fan page was around using previous or existing cast members to step into Vera’s sidekick’s shoes.
On revealing he was quitting the drama, Kenny, 47, gave a special mention to fans and said: “And finally the Vera fans: without you and your support I would never have made so many films. You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty and love for the show.”
