Eamonn Holmes believes GB News is leading the race of alternative news channels as he lauded his new employers. The veteran news anchor is celebrating 40 years on television and he shared his views on news channels and the rivalry with his counterpart Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

Eamonn Holmes heaped praise on his current employer GB News during an assessment of their progress as a TV network.

The former This Morning presenter appeared on Steph’s Packed Lunch to reflect on his long broadcasting career.

Channel 4 host, Steph McGovern, asked Eamonn: “When I was talking to you last time TalkTV hadn’t come out, obviously that’s come out now.

“Do you feel that rivalry with Piers morgan? I know you’re not on at the same time but there’s talk of all these new channels and competing against each other.”

The veteran broadcaster declared: “But there is, there’s so much pressure on all these channels to get an audience and the audience is only a certain size.

“So far we are doing very, very well on this and the stuff that Piers and TalkTV do is very good but we seem to have struck oil.

“People are there, people are in their droves listening to us and talking to us.”

“The big difference for us is we’re on the radio as well.”

The presenter added: “Being on DAB+ means you can watch a programme in the morning, then get in your car or get on the bus, or whatever you’re going to do, go for a run, put your iPod in and off you go.

“I think the technology and how things progress and you access things is all important

He currently hosts Breakfast with Eamonn and Isabel on GB News after he joined the station in March this year.

Eamonn left presenting duties alongside his wife Ruth Langsford on This Morning in December last year, ending a 15-year run on the ITV show.

Recently, Eamonn has been suffering “horrendous pain” and has experienced chronic back pain for over 18 months.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the broadcasting legend also opened up on his shingles condition and the effect it’s had on his life.

He explained: “I went to bed one day and woke up the next day looking like Quasimodo.”

“I had my face covered in blisters and had absolutely no idea what it was. I went to the doctors and they thought it could be shingles and I asked, ‘What is shingles?’ They then proceeded to ask me about chickenpox and I had no idea if I had had chickenpox or not, so I called my mother.

The GB News presenter added: “She told me I had chickenpox as a youngster and from there we were able to establish that because of my age and stressful situations, my immune system had weakened and I was the right candidate for shingles.”

Discussing the build-up to his diagnosis, Eamonn revealed: “This was the most horrible experience of my life.

“I had just come away two weeks earlier from the Inland Revenue bringing me to court about IR35 about being self-employed or not.”

He remarked: “There’s some evil things, I mean I would put Inland Revenue at the top of that list.”

Breakfast with Eamonn & Isabel airs Monday to Thursday at 6am on GB News
