What happened in the last season of Hope Street? Recap of series 1
Hope Street is finally back on our screens!
The popular Northern Irish serial drama, which centres on the residents of a picturesque town by the name of Port Devine and it’s local police department, returns to daytime screens after a year-long wait.
The second series picks up six months after the events of the first, with Onspector Finn O’Hare (Ciaran McMenamin) struggling in the aftermath of the car crash which nearly claimed his life.
Expect drama aplenty, with a number of surprising twists in store, as a host of new characters, including intriguing new detective Al Quinn (Stephen Hagan), arrive in Port Devine, making the second series just as unmissable as the first.
The first instalment hits BBC One on Friday March 17, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s on the cards.
But are you struggling to recall where we left off?
If that’s the case, then you needn’t worry, as Metro.co.uk is on hand to catch up right up to date, with a proper detailed recap of the events of the first series.
What happened in Hope Street series 1 and where did we leave off?
The first series of Hope Street dealt with the story of DC Leila Hussain (Amara Karan), who rocked up in Port Devine during the serial drama’s very first episode, and wasted little time in getting the local’s tongues wagging.
Her reasons for coming to the sleepy little town in Northern Ireland were shrouded in mystery at first, but viewers soon learned that the newcomer was working undercover, as there were ‘dangerous’ people after her.
Finn was the only one who knew her secret, which he kept even from his own colleagues Marlene Pettigrew (Kerri Quinn) and PC Callum McCarthy (Niall Wright), but their intuition led them to discover there was more to Leila than meets the eye, with Callum inadvertently putting her life in danger when he got an article about her in the local paper.
Rafid Kartar (Azan Ahmed), an old acquaintance of Leila’s, subsequently showed up in Port Devine, and it turned out that he was the brother of Zayn, who was a high-profile criminal involved in an illegal gun operation in Nottingham.
Leila was investigating the gang behind said operation, and she secured enough evidence to take the case to trial. Leila admitted that she used Rafid in order to get close to Zayn, and a gun showdown ensued, with Marlene ultimately coming to Leila’s rescue.
With her secret now out, the team bonded and Finn, struggling to hide his feelings, kissed Leila, but their romance was soon scuppered by the return of the inspector’s wife Siobhan (Rachel Tucker), who was keen to reunite with her hubby.
Siobhan, who had an affair with her son Shay’s PE teacher, was apologetic, but she was destroyed to discover that Finn was seeing Leila. What’s more, she had other things to worry about after finding out that she had cancer.
Concepta O’Hare (Bríd Brennan), who had previously run Siobhan out of town, discovered the truth about her daughter-in-law’s diagnosis and shared this information with Leila, which ultimately led to the detective deciding to leave Port Devine during the final episode.
Finn got wind of both Siobhan’s cancer and Leila’s departure and set off in his car, with viewers unsure if he was going to his wife’s chemotherapy appointment or to stop Leila at the airport.
Before we found out the answer, he was involved in a serious car accident, which left his life hanging in the balance.
Marlene, meanwhile, underwent quite a journey throughout the course of the first series, revealing to Leila that she was gay, while Callum, who had a crush on Leila, remains as unlucky in love as ever.
Bless him.
Over at the Commodore, Nicole Devine (Niamh McGrady), who is desperate to be a mummy, discovered that husband Clint Dunwoody (Aaron McCusker) had a daughter with another woman and, instead of being angry, she was delighted, knowing that she’s now a stepmummy.
That’s you all up to date and ready for series two! Expect more shocks and adventures for our beloved Port Devine-dwellers in another truly unmissable series.
Hope Street series two begins Friday March 17 at 1:45pm on BBC One, or stream every episode on iPlayer right now.
