Fans of The View were in for a surprise on Monday when long-time host Whoopi Goldberg presented the series without her signature glasses. ABC viewers and Goldberg’s co-hosts were quick to congratulate her, though the 67-year-old TV star joked some fans may not have recognised her.

Goldberg went without glasses on The View for the first time in years to kick off another week of the popular US talk show.

She confirmed she had recently had an operation on her eyes to improve her vision and no longer needed corrective lenses to present the series.

Her co-host Sunny Hostin was quick to ask for the explanation behind the new look.

“I had an operation, and they replaced the lens,” Goldberg confirmed, pointing to her left eye.

“And the lens they replaced it with is kind of like my eyeglass lens.”

“You can see!” Hostin exclaimed as the live audience erupted in applause.

Goldberg went on to admit she had started having trouble reading the autocue for the show before undergoing the procedure.

She clarified her operation was different from cataract surgery, but her lenses had been corrected using “teeny tiny cataracts”.

The host also urged her viewers to try the procedure if they were having trouble with their own vision.

“If you’re having any issues with your eyes, please go get them checked because, you know, the bionic times have arrived,” she joked.

Goldberg reminisced about her earlier appearances in films and TV in which she wore different glasses or went without completely.

If you’re over 28,” she said, “You know what I looked like before, when I was wearing sunglasses or cool glasses because they were cool.”

“If you’re under 28, you don’t know that there was a time that I didn’t have glasses, and now this is what I looked like.”

Finally, she joked: “It’s not so bad! It’s not so bad.”

Many fans of The View took to Twitter during Monday’s show to appreciate Golderbg’s new glasses-free look.

Kacie Sommers said: “Whoopi looks great! Fantastic with or without glasses! You look MAHVALOUS dahling!!!” (sic)

Tinna Picciano wrote: “I really like Whoopi without her glasses we see those gorgeous eyes !!!”

@helloal00990029 exclaimed: “Whoopi looks fabulous!! Her hair. Makeup. No glasses!”

And Joni Espinoza tagged the show and said: “Tell Whoopi she LOOKS GREAT without glasses!”

The View airs weekdays at 11am on ABC in the USA.
