Why is Jen Shah on trial?

Jen Shah's legal problems date back to March 2021 after she was arrested on charges of fraud and money laundering.

She has since been accused of running a telemarketing scam that targeted hundreds of elderly people nationwide alongside multiple accomplices.

In April 2021, Shah pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering charges.

Despite her not guilty plea Stuart Smith, her former assistant and alleged accomplice, pleaded guilty in November 2021 to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with telemarketing, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and one count of obstructing an official proceeding.

Following the arrest, the star was slammed by fans for "lying" and saying her husband was "hospitalized with internal bleeding" as others also labeled her as a "pathological liar" and "not even a good or smart liar."

On July 11, 2022, Jen's trial was set to commence and the proceedings are scheduled to start that Monday.

It was revealed that the reality star planned on pleading guilty to the charges stemming from the alleged aforementioned telemarketing scheme during the court proceedings.

Why did Jen Shah turn down a plea deal?

During part three of the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 2 reunion Shah touched upon her legal issues where she revealed exactly why she turned down a plea deal.

“I’m fighting this. I am innocent,” Shah said in a statement via Page Six.

“And I will fight for every person out there that can’t fight for themselves because they don’t have the resources or the means, so they don’t fight.”

She went on to add, “I will fight because No. 1, I’m innocent and No. 2, I’m going to f***ing represent every other person out there that can’t fight and hasn’t been able to.”

At this time it remains unclear what prosecutors offered her but she is reportedly facing up to 50 years in prison if convicted.

What did Heather Gay say about Jen's case?

During the reunion special, Shah's co-stars opened up about their feelings on the subject and showed their support.

“I love Jen. I don’t care if she’s guilty or not,” Heather Gay said.

“I believe her, too. And I want the best for her and her family and I’ll be in court every day and I will fight for her. She’s in the fight of her life.

“We got your back. We love you," she added.

Host Andy Cohen then asked Meredith Marks, whom Shah has feuded with throughout the season, what she thought about the situation, later admitting that she has conflicting feelings.

"I have no idea, I hope so," she said before adding, "I'm not the judge and jury."
