John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) faces another round of obstacles in the upcoming fifth season of Paramount’s Yellowstone, from his backstabbing adoptive son Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) and race to become Governor of Montana to the lingering threat of financial behemoth Market Equities. However, could season five finally be the time for John to meet his maker after so many shaves with death before? Showrunner Sheridan has done little to quash the theories.
Sheridan has all but confirmed that a major character in Yellowstone will fail to see out the upcoming fifth run.
The likes of John, Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) have all been dangerously close to meeting their demises before but managed to survive this long.
But all that could be about to change as Sheridan dropped a cryptic yet unnerving analogy as to what fans can expect in season five.
“If you look at everyone as a chess piece in season five,” he began to Entertainment Tonight. “It is impossible to keep playing the game without taking chess pieces off the board.”
But which “chess piece” will fall in the fifth season of Yellowstone? After all, John seems invincible having cheated death on more than one occasion.
In season one, John’s cancer diagnosis sent shockwaves through the Dutton clan before a ruptured stomach ulcer left him requiring emergency surgery from the ranch’s vet.
Fast-forward to the season three finale and John was peppered by assault rifle bullets during Garrett Randall’s orchestrated assassination attempts on his family.
In another stroke of luck, he only survived thanks to the quick thinking of Rip and the fact his phone managed to stop a fatal shot to his heart.
Add to the mix the countless number of shoot-outs John has found himself involved in, whether it be Checkers (Brad Carter) or the thieves in the diner who claimed the life of Sheriff Donnie Haskell (Hugh Dillon), and it could be argued John’s luck is bound to run out.
However, Costner has already addressed theories about whether or not his character will perish in season five, telling Extra TV: “Well, I don’t want to die.”
He went on to seemingly rubbish the rumour by adding: “There’s just too much to do.”
However, he did concede: “In terms of this story, I don’t know where that’s gonna go. I haven’t really thought about that. I mean everybody dies but it’s how you live.”

Fans would undoubtedly be devastated if the show’s leading man were to exit but given his plot armour thus far, perhaps it’s time.
Of course, John isn’t the only Yellowstone Ranch figure whose days of dodging death may finally catch up to them.
Beth somehow miraculously survived the bomb planted in her offices in the season three finale, emerging from the wreckage with a few cuts and bruises.
She also narrowly avoided a horrific death at the hands of the Beck brothers’ hitmen, who were moments away from sexually assaulting her before Rip intervened – taking a bullet wound in his stomach for his heroics.
Could Beth be the “chess piece” Sheridan was alluding to? Again, the fan-favourite’s exit would leave a very unique-shaped hole in the hearts of diehard fans.
Then there’s the case of Jamie who – if Rip discovers he knew about the assassination attempts on his wife Beth – would undoubtedly risk a trip to the “train station”.
Or it may even be Rip himself who lands himself in hot water after a brief clip of him in the season five trailer shows him loading his assault rifle ready for war – but will he end up on the losing side?
Fans will have to wait until Yellowstone season five arrives to be sure but given Sheridan is making no secret of exits lying ahead, perhaps the fandom best brace itself for the worse.
Yellowstone season 5 premieres on the Paramount Network in the USA on Sunday, November 13. Seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Paramount+ now.
