Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) and her brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) have been at each other’s throats for all four seasons of Taylor Sheridan’s smash hit Western drama, Yellowstone. Now the gripping Paramount Network drama has revealed Jamie’s true parentage and Beth has more control over her adopted rival than ever, series regular Kelly has shed some light on their relationship behind the scenes.
Kelly and Wes both had ample warning about their characters’ fierce dynamic during preparation on Yellowstone’s first season.
The English actress revealed they pored over showrunner Taylor’s scripts for the first episodes to gear themselves up for the tense scenes to come.
“I remember the first time, in season one, when we all met and we were introduced to one another,” Kelly recalled.
“We had the first six scripts and it was very clear, the relationship between Beth and Jamie. And how Beth, particularly, treats Jamie and what she thinks about him.”
However prepared they were for season one, Beth and Jamie’s relationship has only disintegrated further over the last four years.
In season three, Jamie made the shocking discovery his father John (Kevin Costner) had kept his true parentage and the fact he had been adopted hidden from him for decades.
Fast-forward to this year’s season finale, and Jamie has taken out his biological father Garrett Randall (Will Patton), only to have the crime filmed by Beth for blackmail.
Kelly continued: “I remember saying to him – because Wes and I have a lot of fun with our scenes, and we get on very well. There was a lot of mutual respect for one another.”
“But I do remember saying to him, ‘I’ll see you on the other side of this if it gets a bit hairy.’
“Little did I know how insane and how dark and how difficult their relationship was going to be and, actually, already was.”
Beth has hated Jamie since their teenage years as it’s revealed he had forcibly made her infertile by booking her into an abortion procedure at a Native American reservation.
Now the ruthless financier has lost the chance of ever having her own children with her doting partner Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and the trauma has made her the toughest member of the Dutton family by far.

Despite navigating one of the most twisted TV relationships in history for nearly half a decade, Kelly and Wes have retained a strong dynamic when the cameras aren’t rolling.
“That’s been one of the most difficult and weirdly enjoyable parts of the show, for me,” Kelly told the SAG-AFTRA Foundation
“It’s that dynamic, that relationship. So traumatic and so deeply layered. But, yeah, we’ve really gone on a journey together as characters and as actors together.
“The joy of having spent so long now working together that we don’t really talk about the scenes anymore.”
“At the beginning we’d talk about a lot and we’d sort of work out the scene, and now we sort of show up and it’s a bit like Gladiators.
“We’re thrown in a ring and we’re just going to go at it! And I love that feeling.”
Unfortunately for Beth, Jamie will prove useful to the Duttons in their upcoming battle with Market Equities, but it’s only a matter of time before another row explodes between the two siblings.
